Main Events and NBC Present Boxing's Boys of Spring

Feb 24, 2004: by Alex Pierpaoli

In a media conference call on Monday, NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer and Promoter Kathy Duva announced five consecutive Saturday afternoon fight cards beginning April 17, running through May 15, featuring Main Events’ brightest young prospects. In combined broadcasts by NBC and Telemundo, boxing fans will be treated to another look at Rocky Juarez, Panchito Bojado, Juan Diaz and Kermit Cintron, all of whom scored impressive victories last spring in the debut of the live free-tv coverage. This spring, 2000 Olympian super heavyweight Calvin Brock gets his debut on NBC when he headlines the final date of the series in May.

“We’re known as storytellers,” said NBC’s Schanzer. “We’re going to continue the stories that started last year…we’re really excited and enthused to continue.” Schanzer recapped some of the highlights of the live Saturday afternoon shows from last spring, which included a fight-of-the-year candidate in Juan Diaz-Eleazar Contreras, highlight-reel quality knockouts by Cintron and Juarez, and a dramatic, blood-bath slug-out in Panchito Bojado versus William Adamyan. Schanzer described “promising sponsorship” for the upcoming series and the network has increased their commitment from three Saturday shows last year to five same-day broadcasts which start with undercard action on Telemundo and then switch over to NBC for the Main Event.

This spring each of the young prospects faces a step up in class on their Saturday fight dates and all of them sound eager for the opportunity. Undercard match-ups for the upcoming dates will be announced in the next two weeks.
