In Junior featherweight action that was featured on the undercard of Bermane Stiverne vs. Deontay Wilder, on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Leo Santa Cruz defeated Jesus Ruiz. Cruz dominated Ruiz throughout the fight until the knockout (TKO) which came in the 8th round. Ref Kenny Bayless stopped the fight 29 seconds into round 8 as Cruz had Ruiz on the ropes eating a lot of punches.
With the victory, Cruz retained his 122lbs. title and saw his record improve to 29-0-1, 17 KOs. Ruiz' record drop to 32-6-5, 21 KOs.
Punch stats: Santa Cruz landed 277 out of 641 thrown for a connection rate of 43%. Ruiz landed 120 out of 554 thrown for a connection rate of 22%.
