On Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, featured on the Bermane Stiverne vs. Deontay Wilder undercard, Leo Santa Cruz retained his title with an easy victory over Jesus Ruiz. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight 29 seconds into the 8th round. The fight was televised on SHOWTIME.
After the battle, Cruz stated to the TV audience and those in attendance: "It was a war but we came prepared. He gave me a tough fight. We went after him and stopped him. I know he was prepared."
When asked about who he wants next, Cruz named 3, stating: "Of course, I want the best. I want to be the best. I want (Abner) Mares, (Guillermo) Rigondeaux, Scott Quigg. Hopefully, it can be one of them next."
