Oscar De La Hoya on the One TRUE Reason Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather hasn't Happened By Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing (Dec 16, 2014) TweetFollow @DoghouseBoxing
At the start of his career, Oscar De La Hoya was known as "Chicken" De La Hoya (Thanks in part to then scribe for MaxBoxing.com, Michael Katz who penned the term / name). To De La Hoya's credit, he worked hard to distance himself from the nickname and started taking on all challenges.
At the end of his impressive career, no one remembered or called him a chicken anymore - the name no longer suited him, nor did anyone warrant that it was needed anymore - for indeed De La Hoya did up his game and everyone, even his harshest critics took notice.
Perhaps, as it seemed to turn out, De La Hoya was never a chicken, he just needed to get over his own ego. So how did De La Hoya land bigger and better, fan friendly fights? He Leggo that ego (pun intended!)
Regarding a proposed bout; Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather, De La Hoya believes that these days "egos are in the way" and in his own words feels the fighters need to "take a page out of my book."
Quoted recently in the media, De La Hoya stated:
"I was willing to fight anyone. When I say ego is not my amigo, it's really not. It keeps you from making the right decision, because of your ego."
In Closing:
Truer words have never been spoken in regards to this dream bout.
Say what you want, believe what you want to believe... but EGOS is 100% the truest reason this fight has yet to come off.
