Canelo - But Is he really that important to HBO Boxing? Here is your answer... By Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing (Dec 29, 2014) TweetFollow @DoghouseBoxing
SHOWTIME has Floyd Mayweather Jr. as their showcase fighter. Not bad. HBO Boxing, they got Manny Pacquiao... that's pretty impressive also. Pacman and Money are set to be leaving soon - So what about the future? HBO is banking on Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Let's face it... can't blame 'em! I too am expecting big things from Canelo.
Recently speaking to Ring Magazine, Ken Hershman (HBO's Big Cheese for Boxing and a decent gentleman in his own right) was asked (by Michael Rosenthal) how important to HBO was the signing of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez? Hershman made it clear... it was extremely important.
Regarding the signing of Canelo and the significance of how important it was to HBO,
Hershman told the publication: "
Hugely important. He’s a major figure in the sport. He’s just 24 years old. I think he’s going to be the No. 1 attraction in boxing for many years to come and a key component in what HBO Boxing is about for the foreseeable future."
Hershman added:
"I can’t underestimate the importance of bringing him back to HBO."
Many, including myself would agree that Canelo is a special kind of guy, with more than just exceptional skills - he's also media and fan friendly. The kind of fighter fans can look up to as a role model - which unfortunately the sport lacks a lot of these days. Canelo could be the bright spot the sport needs, and HBO is brilliant to tie themselves in for the ride. With Canelo (who fights for Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions) and HBO - the future could hold many possibilities - especially now that Mayweather and Pacquiao have few days and fights left in them.
