Promoter Bob Arum has told scribe Robert Morales of presstelegram.com that his fighter Miguel Cotto would not be fighting Oscar De La Hoya next. Arum says the reason why is because De La Hoya is facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch instead. According to Arum, De La Hoya vs Mayweather Jr. II is a "done deal."
However the presstelegram also quotes Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions as saying that nothing is done. Although Schaefer confirmed a rematch with De La Hoya and Mayweather Jr is not a done deal...
he did not deny that serious negotiations between both camps are in the works for the rematch.
Schaefer told Morales: "Nothing is done," adding: "I don't know why Bob would say that, he's not even involved in the negotiations."
Schaefer told the publication that serious negotiations with Mayweather Jr. have occurred, and that Mayweather Jr. is the only fighter with whom the De La Hoya camp has been negotiating with for a fight in May.
"The fact is, there are very many elements that still have to be worked on," Schaefer told the publication, adding. "I am not going to say the fight is done until it is signed. If for some reason the Mayweather fight doesn't work out, then it's going to be Cotto.
"If Cotto is already fighting somebody else, then it will be somebody else."
