Oscar De La Hoya pumping Saul Alvarez doesn't mean a 'Stupid' Boxing comeback... Relax He won't Do it

By Johnny Benz, Doghouse Boxing. If Frankie was in Hollywood these days, he'd certainly tell Oscar De La Hoya, "Relax, Don't Do it". But seriously, as if De La Hoya at this point in his life needs some has been from yesteryear to tell him that. Relax folks, there is no speculation of an Oscar De La Hoya
comeback... except for those trying to create a headline out of nothing
at all. Ok before I move on, here is the run down... De La Hoya made a recent tweet
pumping himself and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Some scribes have taken to that comment and ran with
headlines basically stating and creating speculation of a De La Hoya
comeback. Here is the tweet causing some heads to spin wilth silly speculation...
De La Hoya tweeted: "I'm really confident I can do some damage to any 54 pounder in the world, except "Saul Canelo Alvarez"."
Now
if you actually believe that is Oscar De La Hoya hinting about a
comeback, then I would love to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. First of
all, De La Hoya would need to be extremely stupid to make a comeback
now. I just don't think he is stupid. He is making mad money as a
promoter, he has a beautiful wife as well as Children. His health seems
in tact and he is living large. What kind of idiot would one be to
risk all that for some more punches to the head?! De La Hoya is no
idiot... but he sure knows how to play the media (and good for him).
Second of all, "The Golden Boy" turns 40 in February. He hasn't fought since a loss to
Manny Pacquiao in '08, retired officially in '09. If he were to make a
comeback, nothing good at all would come out of it. He'd be
looking like a stupid old man inside a boxing ring.
Now
I admire De La Hoya for what he did in his career, but even De La Hoya
knows it's a new generation's time.... that is why he is pumping
Alvarez with the above statement, while throwing himself some accolades
of his own glory of Days gone by. There is no shame in that, and one
should expect an ex-champion to always talk like a champion. Nothing
more, nothing less.
I would be shocked, saddened and even disgusted if Oscar made a comeback. It would by a huge mistake on so many levels. Luckily, I think he is way too smart to be that stupid.
