Meningitis is a serious illness, just ask Joe Calzaghe who suffered the sickness at a young age. Basically from a quick search on the net (Thank you Wiki and Google), Meningitis is an inflammation of the protective membranes that cover the brain as well as the spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges.

From Wiki, This inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, and less commonly by certain drugs. Meningitis can be life-threatening because of the inflammation's proximity to the
brain and spinal cord; therefore the condition is classified as a medical emergency.- End of info from Wiki.

In a recent Health article published by the Daily Mail Uk, legendary Joe Calzaghe who retired from Boxing undefeated, discussed his serious bout with Meningitis when he was only 18 years of age.

In discussing what Calzaghe states was the worst illness he ever had, Welsh superstar tells the publication he caught the viral infection when he was 18. "I had terrible headaches for several days," stated Calzaghe, who added: "Initially, I thought it was just flu but, eventually, when I got round to seeing my doctor, I had to be rushed to hospital."

Doctors at the hospital would confirm the worse through blood tests. "My mother and father were besides themselves. Blood tests showed that it was viral meningitis," stated Calzaghe.

In true Calzaghe fashion, not known for taking a 10 count, he would go on to fully recover, knocking out Meningitis and keeping his undefeated record intact.
