Boxing: Bartnik Warms Up With TKO Victory

Feb 19, 2004  Media Report
Wroclaw-based Polish outfit; Polski Boks Zawodowy S. S. A., made its promotional debut this past Saturday (February 14), with a successful show in Swiebodzice near Wroclaw. The card was a mixed boxing/kickboxing event, headlined by a featherweight low-kick professional European title (WAKO PRO) fight, that saw hometown-man’s, Mariusz Cieslinski, win by sixth-round TKO, courtesy of a traditional boxing left hook to the liver, over durable Italian champion Gianluca Carta.

The main event of the boxing-part of the show, featured heavyweight Wojciech Bartnik (206 lbs) in a tune-up fight before contesting the vacant WBF super cruiserweight title in March. Soutpaw Bartnik - former Olympic bronze medallist (Barcelona 1992, light heavyweight), and 10-times Polish domestic champion, improved his record to 11-3-1 (7), stopping Romanian Marian Tudor in the third round of a scheduled eight-rounder. Tudor (206 lbs) thereby fell to 6-5-1 (2).

In a fast-paced welterweight contest, Slawomir Ziemlewicz (Panix Europe) outscored, thanks to body shots that slowed down his opponent, speedy and talented pro debutant (European champion in kick-boxing), Lukas Body from the Czech Republic, and moved his own record to 4-0 (2).

Also, Ukranian super middleweight Roman “The Ukranian Tyson” Shkarupa (Panix Europe) recorded a four-round draw against smart and fast Romanian Mircea Telecan, who was coming of an upset win over 11-0 Ibrahim Azunkaya in Germany last month, in an entertaining fight contested at light heavyweight. Shkarupa, who knocked out 80 opponents in the amateur ranks, is now 1-0-1 (1), while Telecan goes to 3-5-2 (1).

Female debutant Elzbieta Szczeglik, though undoubtedly gifted and in a good shape, didn’t manage to overcome her first-time-nerves, and was judged a points-loser against Croatia’s Suzana Stunja in a four round light welterweight bout. Stunja stays unbeaten, and is now 4-0

In the second kickboxing (low kick) contest Rafal Petertil (Fighter Wroclaw) outscored over 3 surprisingly hard fought rounds his team-mate, Marcin Bachorz.
