 Gatti-Ward III Named "Fight of Year" By Ring MagazineMar 2, 2004 Media Report
Gatti-Ward III, the eipc battle that concluded a trilogy between two of boxing’s most fearless warriors, has been recognized as “Fight of the Year” by Ring Magazine. Gatti-Ward III is the second of the three matches between Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward to receive Fight of the Year honors, as their initial bout in May 2002 set a new standard for fight fans. In its May 2004 issue (featuring James Toney on the cover), Ring Magazine recaps, “He (Gatti) rammed thudding jabs into Ward’s pink, bloody face, and then some booming left hooks after, and then it was Ward who gave ground. Back and forth it went, Ward’s rights against Gatti’s hooks and jabs, and suddenly it looked a lot like the first fight. The 12,643 fans screaming their lungs out must have been incredulous at their immense good fortune.” “Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward showed tremendous heart, amazing courage, and incredible sportsmanship throughout their crowd-pleasing brawl, Gatti-Ward III,” said Ken Condon. President of Bally’s Atlantic City. “They are true champions in the sport of boxing, and we could not be prouder of the fact that we were able to bring the Fight of the Year to Atlantic City.” “Gatti-Ward III was a fitting ending to an epic trilogy,” said Kathy Duva, CEO of Main Events. Gatti-Ward III took place at Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall on June 7, 2003. The evening of boxing was presented by Bally’s Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City and Main Events, in association with DiBella Entertainment. The bout was also sponsored by Budweiser.
