Training Injury Forces Jeff Lacy out of Boxing Showdown Against Tito Mendoza
Feb 11, 2004 Media Report
HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 11, 2004) Undefeated super middleweight contender JEFF “LEFT HOOK” LACY, 16-0 (13 KOs), suffered a training injury forcing him to withdraw from his WBC Continental Americas / USBA / NABA title defense against top-10 contender Tito Mendoza. The championship bout was scheduled for March 6 at Foxwoods Resort Casino, and was to be televised nationally on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing as the co-main event to the WBO jr. lightweight title rematch between Diego Corrales and Joel Casamayor, which will proceed as planned.
Lacy sustained the injury yesterday (February 10) from a punch which has caused some double vision. After visiting his doctor today, Lacy was ordered to discontinue sparring pending the results of an MRI.
“Jeff is very disappointed,” said promoter Gary Shaw. “He and Freddie Roach were having a tremendous camp together. The doctor indicated today that the punch affected his fourth cranial nerve, which can cause double vision. He thought it was prudent for Jeff to undergo an MRI, which naturally, Jeff will do.”
Lacy is currently world-rated No. 5 by the WBC and the WBA, and No. 8 by the IBF.
