Boxing: Shane Mosley vs Felix Trinidad
Feb 15, 2004 Doghouse Boxing Exclusive
BIG BEAR LAKE, CA (Valentine’s Day) Glove is a many-splendored thing. SUGAR SHANE MOSLEY, 39-2 (35 KOs), and FELIX “TITO” TRINIDAD, 41-1 (34 KOs), are engaged in serious negotiations over a proposal to walk down the aisle and into the ring later this year.
“Sugar Shane and Tito are ready to set a date,” said Mosley’s promoter Gary Shaw. “Sugar Shane has given me a mandate to only negotiate career-defining fights and who better than Tito Trinidad? Once Sugar Shane defeats Winky Wright to become the first-ever undisputed 154-pound champion, there is only one challenge left Trinidad!
“They share so much history,” continued Shaw. “They are the only two men to defeat Oscar De La Hoya. Both have won three world titles in three different weight classes. They truly are the cream and the class of boxing. It is a dream match-up for fight fans around the world. After the final details are worked out next week, the only thing needed will be for Sugar Shane and Tito to say ‘I do.’”
But first Mosley has a date with destiny -- UNDISPUTED: THE WAR at 154 -- on Saturday, March 13 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, when he risks the WBC/WBA super welterweight titles he won off De La Hoya against IBF jr. middleweight champ Wright, 46-3 (25 KOs), to become the 154-pound division’s first-ever undisputed three-belt world champion. Wright is in the third year of his second reign as a jr. middleweight champion. The historic world title fight will be televised nationally on HBO, beginning at 9:30 P.M. ET / 6:30 P.M. PT.
“I promised myself and my fans that from now on, I would only take career-defining fights,” said Mosley from his training compound in Big Bear Lake, CA. “I consider that promise a solemn vow. Winky Wright is for boxing history and personal history. Felix Trinidad is for immortality. He is the biggest challenge out there, and everyone knows I love a challenge.”
