Venice, CA. - WBA and IBO Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has cancelled a much discussed title defense against Andy Lee scheduled for April 26th in his return to Madison Square Garden and HBO due to the sudden passing of his father.
This news was first announced on Saturday, March 1, when Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions was contacted by Golovkin’s manager Oleg Hermann while he and trainer Abel Sanchez were in San Antonio to attend the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr./Bryan Vera rematch.
On Tuesday, February 18th, Gennady Ivanovich Golovkin, age 68, suffered a sudden fatal heart attack. GGG is currently in a traditional 40-day mourning period with his family in Kazakhstan.
“Everything in regard to Gennady’s boxing career is currently on hold,” said Loeffler. “His priority is to spend time with his family and at the appropriate time he will advise us when he is ready to continue his boxing career.”
“Everyone on the GGG Team would like to thank the international boxing community for their support and extended condolences to Gennady and his family since this unfortunate event happened.”
