Camden, N.J. (Monday) - Undefeated super middleweight Derrick "Take it to the Bank" Webster (18-0, 9 KOs) is well known for being active in the community and giving back as much as he possibly can. His charitable persona was on full display this past weekend in Camden, hosting the first of what will be an annual toy drive for the holidays.
"It was a very special event that we put together," Webster said of the toy drive. "It meant a lot to me to see the kids have smiles on their faces. We were able to provide over 200 gifts, and I loved getting in the ring and being able to interact with the kids. I just love kids, period."
At the event, world famous DJ Quick supplied the music and set up a great environment for the toy drive. Webster stepped into the ring and put on a workout for everyone in attendance, also inviting a few kids into the ring for some brief "sparring." Once the workout was completed, every kid was given the opportunity to select three gifts each before games and raffles were held to win an additional present.
Needless to say, everyone who attended the event left as winners.
"A lot of times, I wake up with something on my heart," Webster said about the idea to host a toy drive. "We didn't go around to different businesses and stores for this. We went into our own pockets. You don't have to be a millionaire to give back to the people. $100 will go a long way. $50 will go a long way."
The 1st Annual Derrick Webster Toy Drive caps off what has been an outstanding year for Webster professionally, both inside and outside of the boxing ring. In addition to adding four more victories to his resume in 2014, the Glassboro native signed with DandD Management in February and then inked a promotional contract with GH3 Promotions just over a month ago. Webster last stepped into the ring in late November, knocking out once-beaten Odobai Sai in just 22 seconds.
Webster, trainer Denny Brown and his entire team now set their sights on what looks to be a huge 2015, with an announcement regarding his next fight coming soon.
