Kell Brook put the criticism of his last fight against Carson Jones
to one side as he easily dispatched with the challenge of Argentine
Hector Saldivia in three one sided rounds inside a packed Motorpoint
Arena in Sheffield on Saturday. The bout was a final
eliminator for the IBF’s welterweight title and will see Brook face the
winner of Devon Alexander and Randall Bailey that takes place later this
evening at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, NYC.
Brook began the contest behind his jab before a right hurt the
Argentine and a classy uppercut with the same hand dropped him onto the
seat of his pants with 45 seconds of the round remaining. Brook’s right
hand continued to cause damage in round two and his combination punching
was stopping Saldivia from coming back with his own shots, however a
sweeping hook from "El Tigre" gave the local favourite a warning to be
on his guard.
28 seconds into round three Saldivia walked onto a stiff jab from
Brook that put him over. He beat the count but his legs had gone and
referee Howard Foster had no option than to wave the contest off in
bizarre circumstances.
Jamie McDonnell also staked his claim for a shot at a world title at
bantamweight with an 8th round corner retirement win over late
replacement Darwin Zamora in an IBF eliminator. The Nicuraguian had
campaigned at super flyweight and looked much smaller than the Doncaster
man in the ring and he was gradually broken down by some accurate body
work and straight rights from McDonnell who performed impressively but
will have his work cut out against the champion Leo Santa Cruz of
Mexico.
