Boxing results - report. George Groves remained unbeaten and retained his Commonwealth
super-middleweight title after out-pointing cagey veteran Glen Johnson
at ExCel Centre in London on Saturday.
Five years ago Johnson would have been heavily tipped to control the
talented young Groves but at the age of 43 and far too many miles on the
clock in boxing term, ‘The Road Warrior’ could not match the 24
year-old from Hammersmith.
Groves proved clear and unanimous points winner by scores of 120-107 120-107 and 119-109
Although Groves failed to become only the second man to stop Johnson
it was a comprehensive win and he did connect with a straight right hand
in the opening round to force Johnson to cover up
On the whole, though, Groves fought an intelligent fight from the
outside which was just as well as Johnson still proved dangerous up
close. This was evident in the second round when he ruffled Groves twice
when the youngster got too close. Groves heeded the warning boxed well
there after and even wobbled Johnson at the end of the sixth round.
By the fourth the Londoner was in full control, picking off his
opponent at will, but in the fifth he was trading once again and while
he landed freely he was also caught himself.
Groves continued to dish out the punishment in the seventh and even
pinned Johnson on the ropes but he still looked dangerous at times
Johnson was floored with a body shot at the end of the 12
th round but looked as though it was a slip as much as being caused by the punch.
