Johnny Tapia returns to Boxing on March 5th
Feb 20, 2004 Media Report February 19, 2004- 5-time World Champion Johnny Tapia (53-3-2, 28 KOs) returns to the ring in a ten round featherweight bout against fellow New Mexican Frankie Archuleta (22-4-1, 13 KOs) on Telefutura’s March 5th broadcast from Las Vegas, NM. The last time a major fight was held in Las Vegas was over 90 years ago when Heavyweight World Champion Jack Johnson defeated Jim Flynn in 1912. Located two hours outside of Albuquerque, Las Vegas is the hometown of Johnny’s beloved grandparents as well as the hometown of Archuleta. Training at an exclusive 2500 acre mountain retreat in the New Mexicans mountains,Tapia and his trainer former World Champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad had the following to say: Johnny Tapia: “I always love fighting at home. This is my grandparents hometown so this is “mi terra.” (My dirt) The people of Las Vegas are great and they’ve made me feel like family. I’m going to give them a great show.” “I’m in tremendous shape. I feel healthy, happy and can’t wait to get it on.” Eddie Mustafa Muhammad: “Johnny is right where I want him to be. His weight is right on target and his conditioning is great. His training is coming along perfectly. This camp is definitely easier than the camp last September. Johnny is picking up right where he left off. He’s feeling really good about himself, as he should, and is anxious to get in the ring.” Bouts will take place at New Mexico Highlands University, Wilson Complex.
