Paul Williams Bio: Williams vs Wright Boxing Bettting odds
By Brad Marchetti, Doghouse Boxing (April 11, 2009)
With the biggest payday of his career just days away in his bout against Winky Wright, I decided to profile emerging boxing star Paul Williams. Dubbed as a southpaw version of Tommy Hearns, Williams could be considered a player in the mythical pound-4-pound list. Freakishly tall for a welterweight 6’2” with an 82” reach, Paul “The Punisher” towers over his opponents like predatory hawk. Despite having limited amateur background Paul has assaulted the paid ranks with his high-volume punching style. The boxing betting odds for the Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright fight have Williams as
a 9-5 favorite.

Despite having a long frame, Williams does his best work on the inside where he overwhelms opponents with 80+ punches per round. Blessed with natural hand-speed along with great leverage, Williams has explosive power. Despite skinny neck, Williams has also shown a very-good chin. The problem for Williams is that he has made his chin too available at times. Having had little amateur experience, Williams seems to lack natural defensive instincts. Paul’s deficiencies on defense are more readily apparent when he was outboxed by slickster Carlos Quintana. In the return bout Williams nearly detached Quintana’s head from his shoulders with a 1st round KO but nonetheless a chink Williams armor has been exposed. The boxing betting odds OVER\UNDER for the Paul Williams fight is at 9.5 rounds.

Paul’s defense is mainly predicated on his pesky right jab and high punch output to keep opponents on the defensive. In his best performance, Williams outworked and outfought the most avoided man in boxing Antonio Margarito. With his blend of size, power, speed and stamina Williams has loads of ability to climb even higher. Other than Margarito and Quintana however, Williams glossy record had mainly been built against sub-par competition so the Wright fight will be an indicator as to how far he has progressed. The boxing betting odds for the Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright fight have Williams as a -200 favorite.
