Former Boxing Champ Greg Page 1958-2009

Sad news out of Louisville, Kentucky today, as the Associated Press has reported that former heavyweight champion Greg Page has died at his home at the age of 50.

According to his wife Patricia, Page passed away due to complications related to injuries he suffered in his 2001 fight against Dale Crowe. Following that 10th round defeat, Page was hospitalized with bleeding on the brain. He subsequently suffered a massive stroke, and after recovering, remained paralyzed on his left side and required the use of a wheelchair.

But Page should be best remembered for his life in the ring. A National Golden Gloves and National AAU champion in 1978, Page was a talented boxer who may not have gotten all he could have out of his skill set, but he did win the WBA heavyweight championship in 1984 with an eighth round TKO of Gerrie Coetzee. Page lost the belt in his first defense to Tony Tubbs in 1985, but continued to fight until 2001. Among his victims in the ring were George Chaplin, Stan Ward, Alfredo Evangelista, Scott LeDoux, Jimmy Young, James Tillis, Renaldo Snipes, James Broad, Bonecrusher Smith, and Tim Witherspoon.

His final pro record was 58-17-1 with 48 KOs.
