Fresh from Kiev, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson spent last week in Moscow. The thoroughly-advertised visit that, by hearsay, was to result in a promotion contract with Nemiroff looked rather a hush-hushed tour of the Moscow restaurants in company of the business and political crème-de-crème of Russia, including Umar Jabrailov, Ramzan Kadyrov, Iskander Makhmudov and Leonid Tyagachev.

On the day of Tyson’s arrival, they looked completely out of control in Russian office of Nemiroff which had actually arranged the visit. Off-the-record Tyson was expected to seal a promotion contract with the company to get $5 million. Officially, however, the boxer was said to have decided to spend five days in Moscow during his European tour.

In Moscow, Tyson was never seen in company of Nemiroff head Yakov Gribov. Moreover, Nemiroff’s brand could be spotted on the boxer’s clothes only at the opening night.

After establishing himself in three luxe rooms of Ararat Park Hyatt, Tyson went for a review excursion to admire St. Basil’s Cathedral and study the product range in the fur boutique of GUM (State Department Store). Having confined to two places of sightseeing, Mike stepped into the black Mercedes and left in a solid company of OMON guards.

On the next day, Tyson overslept the scheduled meeting with Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who is the State Duma’s vice speaker and LDPR leader. He left the hotel at 8 p.m.

By contrast, Tyson got up early on Wednesday and went to Roberto Cavalli boutique in the Tretyakov Str. which opened at 10.45 a.m. specially to cater for the boxer’s taste. Apparently in good mood, Tyson was always joking, saying there were no black girls in Moscow Cavalli. By no doubts a presentable shopper, Tyson never asked for discount when buying a brown sheepskin ($6500), black sweater ($465), hand-back ($2000) and bijou ($330 overall). The farewell “Thank you” sounded with no accent at all.

Mike left Cavalli to lunch with the senator from Chechnya Umar Jabrailov in the Vogue Café. During the lunch, Tyson met Chechnya’s vice premier Ramzan Kadyrov, who is known as a great fan of boxing. At night, Tyson was in Uzbekistan restaurant, where the Moscow beauties were crowding on sail, ignorant, perhaps, that the dinner was attended by wives and children of arrangers. The girls’ eyes were pensive and woeful when the target was leaving the restaurant. Mike returned in an hour to fetch one of the girls on his way.

Next morning, Tyson neglected Octyabr Movie Center, where he was to be introduced to Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov and Co. The night saw another intrigue. No one was sure in what restaurant Mike would show himself, the tables in three of them had been booked in advance. Tyson preferred Goodman Steakehouse, famous for the meat dishes. Never touching the meat, Tyson helped himself to shrimps and whisky and cola and black caviar, of course. Of Russia’s box lovers, the restaurant was attended by Kuzbassrazrezugol co-owners Iskander Makhmudov and Andrey Bokarev, boxer Roman Karmazin and president of Russian Olympic Committee Leonid Tyagachev. Tyson sniffed distain to the dish of the firm – the 700-gram Cowboy-Steak and moved to Le Gateau Café for pastry.
