We send our condolences to the family and friends of former WBO super bantamweight champion Agapito Sanchez, who died this morning in his native Dominican Republic a day after suffering a gunshot wound to his chest which was allegedly fired by an off-duty police officer.

Sanchez (36-11-3, 18 KOs) was a 5-4 sparkplug who was rarely in a bad fight. A battler who took on the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera, Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao, and Joan Guzman during his 16-year career, Sanchez achieved his dream of becoming a world champion when he knocked Jorge Monsalvo out in seven rounds to win the WBO super bantamweight crown in 2001. In his last fight, on September 17, 'El Ciclon' decisioned Edison
Torres over ten rounds.

Agapito Sanchez was 35.
