Nottingham’s Carl Froch has tipped Hennessy Sports teammate John Murray to make history in the chief support contest to his Commonwealth super middleweight title defence against Ruben Groenewald at the Nottingham Arena on December 2nd by becoming the first ever British fighter to win a WBC World Youth Title.

Murray takes on tough Columbian Nacho Mendoza, who now fights out of Spain, over ten rounds for the lightweight version of the Championship, which has never been contested before on domestic soil.

“As a Hennessy Sports fighter I get to box alongside a lot of talented young boxers,” Froch said. “A lot of them, like John, are going to go on to big things. John is very talented; I am a massive fan. People are raving about other prospects like Kevin Mitchell, but he is better than any of them.

“I was commentating when John went out to Canada on a last minute job a few weeks back and was very impressed. He did an excellent job.

“He boxes very neatly, but comes forward all the time and throws a lot of hurtful shots, particularly to the body. He is very exciting to watch. The locals in Quebec were cheering his name by the time he won.

“I am sure he will win the Nottingham fans over as well. They are a knowledgeable lot and appreciate their boxing, so they will take the time to watch his fight. I hope they all get behind him, because a win would be good for domestic boxing and John has a tough ask.

“The WBC Youth Title has never been won by a British fighter and by the looks of his record the kid John is up against is a bit of a handful. Mendoza has fought over 12 rounds twice and has stopped a good number of opponents early, but I am confident John will come through. It will be tough, but I think his work-rate will be too high for Mendoza. I think he will overwhelm him.”

Froch, who also holds the British title and is ranked highly by the EBU, WBC, WBA and WBO, re-iterated that he too is confident of a big performance on the bill being covered live by Sky Sports.

“I’ve got a fight on my hands as well,” ‘The Cobra’, 16-0(12), added. “Groenewald is a proud warrior who has had to do things the hard way. This is his big opportunity and he is going to do everything he can to take it.”

“He comes at you hard. He is fit, strong, very determined and never gives up. Everything you don’t like to face really. He has never been stopped before, but he is coming up against the Cobra here. I am a cold-blooded predator.”
