Wright outclasses Trinidad, Judah blows out Rivera

Former undisputed 154-pound champion Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright moved up in weight to put the brakes on the Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad express with a lopsided decision win over the former three division champion at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

The 33-year-old southpaw from St Petersburg, Florida, pitched a virtual shutout over the pride of Puerto Rico, who struggled to land a meaningful punch all night.

Wright set the tone early, backing Trinidad up with a stiff jab and punishing him with a laser-like left hand every time he tried to close the distance.

The second and third rounds delivered more of the same with Wright backing Trinidad up with his aggressive jab while the heavy-handed Puerto Rican lunged forward as he attempting to land his vaunted power punches. Wright simply shuffled back a half step every time he came in and caught him with a counter.

The fourth round saw both fighters trade in close and while Trinidad landed a handful of body shots it was Wright, who appeared to be the bigger man in the ring, who got the better of the exchanges on the inside.

Wright’s composure was the difference in the fifth as he caught the charging Trinidad’s punches on the gloves and elbows while countering with well-timed shots to the head and midsection.

Sensing the desperate nature of the situation, Trinidad came out aggressively in the sixth only to be thwarted once again by Wright’s superior footwork, deft defence and timely offence.

Wright continued to dictate the pace in the seventh and eighth, landing his jab with impunity and consistently backing up an increasingly frustrated Trinidad.

The ninth saw more of the same with Trinidad losing a point for a borderline blow from referee Jay Nady.

There was no respite for Trinidad in the tenth as Wright continued to apply the pressure with a mixture of jabs, lead lefts, body shots and the occasional uppercut.

Wright came on strong in the eleventh round, determined to impose his will on the heavily favoured Trinidad who clearly had no answer to Wright’s offensive arsenal and defensive prowess.

The twelfth round was arguably Trinidad’s best as he threw caution into the wind in his attempt to turn around the eleven round deficit. Unfortunately for Trinidad and the entire Puerto Rico island the one punch that was going to turn the fight around never came and when the final bell rang the result was obvious.

When the dust settled all three judges pegged Wright the winner. Jerry Roth and Dave Moretti both saw it 119-108, while Duane Ford scored it a shutout at 120-107.

In the main support bout undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah made short work of game but outgunned mandatory contender Cosme Rivera, dropping him three times en route to a third round stoppage. Rivera was down twice in the first and once in the third.

Also on the card unheralded Thai fighter Sirimongkol Singwangcha turned the tide in the middle rounds to stop Michael Clark in the seventh. Clark was also on the deck in the fifth.

Will Grigsby showed superior handspeed and footwork to outbox and frustrate Jose Victor Burgos for the vacant IBF super flyweight title.
