Indonesian Chris John, 36-0-1 (20), maintained his undefeated record with a dominant stoppage of Tommy Browne, 18-4-1 (7), to retain his WBA featherweight title at Panthers World of Entertainment in Sydney, Australia on Sunday afternoon when Browne failed to answer the bell to begin the 10th round.

The 22-year-old Australian entered the ring to a chorus of cheers looking relaxed and confident. Even while waiting for John to enter the ring, which took an unusually long time, the smile of self assuredness never left Browne’s face.

The action kicked off soon after the opening bell with neither fighter opting for a feeling out round. Browne used his ten inch reach advantage to good effect early, pressuring John and landing some good combinations to the head and body. John was more effective in the second round as be began to time the stalking Browne with quick counters and a solid jab.

In the third round Browne was marked under his left eye and by the fourth John was in total control, darting in and out behind his educated jab to set up solid shots to the head and body. Browne tried ineffectively to counter, but John’s superior handspeed and mobility meant that he was in and out before Browne could land on him.

The height and reach advantages of Browne were of little use from that point on as he continually opted to fight on the inside against the substantially shorter ‘Indonesian Thin Man’. By the middle rounds Browne was spending more and more time covering up on the ropes and waiting for opportunities to counter – opportunities that didn’t come often enough.

John continued to control the action in the seventh round, threading punches through Browne’s defence almost at will and causing his right eye to swell. Sensing the fight was slipping away form him, Browne attempted to up his workrate in the eighth but it was obvious that he was exhausted and had very little left in the tank.

By contrast John had more than enough energy as he continued to pummel Browne with sharp, accurate punches in the ninth. With the Australian covering up on the ropes, John landed a remarkable seven straight jabs through his guard. Browne tried to rally back, but with both eyes swelling, his legs looking unsteady and no pop in his punches it was clear that it was only a matter of time before the fight was stopped.

Between rounds Browne’s corner determined he was unfit to continue and advised Hall of Fame referee Stanley Christdoulou to call a halt to the bout between the 9th and 10th rounds.

“Definitely not going to give up,” said a deflated Browne after the fight. “I worked hard for this.”

At the time of the stoppage two judges had John up be seven points while the third judges had him ahead by five.

On the undercard Chad ‘Hollywood’ Bennett, 15-1-3 (10), won the IBF Pan Pacific welterweight title with a 1st round stoppage of the normally durable Kiatchai 13 Riantower, 18-3 (11). A left hook followed by a chopping right hand from Bennett put Riantower out for the count at the 2:18 minute mark.

At super middleweight Daniel Dawson, 22-0 (14), was once again extended the ten round distance by Josh Clenshaw, 22-14 (13), in a rematch of closely contested December 2004 bout. This time Dawson put on a better show and while Clenshaw had his moments, it was a deserved victory for Dawson by scores of 97-92, 98-92 and 96-93.

Fight just above the middleweight limit Adam Vella,10-0 (6), starched Bruce Glozier, 2-4-1 (0), with a counter left hook right on the button of the brawling Kiwi to stop him at 2:10 of the 1st round.

An entertaining brawl between Mathew Paulley, 6-2-1 (4), and Reuben Martyn, 6-4-2 (3), was cut short when an unintentional headclash opened up a cut above Martyn’s eye in the 2nd resulting in a technical draw.

Commonwealth Games gold medalist Paul Miller 7-0-1 (4) was extended eight rounds by awkward Thai Saiseelek Sakseepueng, 0-2, to win a shutout decision by scores of 80-70, 79-71 and 79-71.

Lovemore Ndou and Shannan Taylor fought a three round exhibition bout after Ndou’s scheduled bout against Cesar Bazan was cancelled.
