41 and Still Going; Johnson TKO’s Mack in 6th

What was supposed to be a great fight with pay day on their minds in Las Vegas, ended up being a lopsided fight on a college campus in Davie Florida. Glen Johnson, 50-13-2 (34) wore down and knocked down Yusaf Mack, 28-3-2 (17), three times in the sixth round for the knockout.

At 41 years of age, Johnson continued with the same style that he has had from the time he became pro. He attacked Mack from the first ring of the bell to start the fight. Though Mack was able to counter and move away
from Johnson in the first two rounds, Johnson continued to keep the pressure on the younger charge. In the fourth round the warriors stood toe-to-toe swinging away in a crowd pleasing exchange. Just when you thought that Johnson was going to have a big round, Mack had a late combo to end the round and possibly steal it.

Johnson easily won the fifth round and kept the momentum into the sixth round. Yusaf Mack had the game plan of staying on the outside and picking his spots to counter Johnsons attack. The steady attack of Johnson backed Mack into the corner; Johnson threw four consecutive left handed jabs and then a straight right hand that put Mack to the canvas. As Johnson smelled blood, Mack continued to cover up attempting to survive the round, but Johnson caught Mack again with a right for the second knockdown. Mack attempted to continue, but with :39 seconds to go in the sixth round, Johnson hit Mack with a short weak left, and Mack took a knee. The fight was waved off, giving the supposedly aging Glen Johnson his 34th knockout.

The credit goes to both fighters for getting in the ring as soon as possible after their originally scheduled pay-per-view bout was cancelled when Andre Berto, 25-0 (19), pulled out of his scheduled fight with WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley, 46-5 (39), to assist the crisis in Haiti. What lies next for Johnson is a possible shot at the title against Tavoris Cloud, 20-0 (18). As for Yusaf Mack, who was trying to bring new blood into the light heavyweight division, we will have to wait and see.
