Arena
Tecate, Tijuana, Mexico (Saturday) Former mini flyweight world champion
and southpaw Giovani Segura halted a very game Felipe Salguero in the 10th and final round of an all-out war on the TV Azteca/Zanfer main event on
Saturday night.
Salguero,
the Tijuana native and clear crowd favorite proved himself an ultra-tough foe,
absorbing a frightful amount of punishment by the heavy-handed Segura, who can
take most anyone out with either hand. Segura came close to getting it done in
the fourth round as a head shot put Salguero down against the ropes. Salguero
managed to get up and finish the round though going down once more in the
following frame, waved off as a slip by referee Juan Jose Ramirez.
Segura
would go on to walk down Salguero with thunderous body shots, putting his
opponent in trouble several times throughout the bout. However, Salguero would
show tremendous heart by coming back with some sharp shots here and there when
things looked bleak, allowing him to last until the 10th round. At
that point. Segura opened up, landing nearly every shot in his arsenal.
The accumulation
of shots by Segura would ultimately force Salguero to go down from sheer
exhaustion as Ramirez jumped in and called it a night for the fallen warrior.

With
the win, Segura moved his record to 32-3-1 (28), putting himself in line for a
shot at WBA/WBO flyweight world champion Juan Francisco Estrada. Salguero
dropped to 19-6-1 (14).
Segura's
stablemate, Alejandro “Cobrita” Gonzalez Jr. did not fare as well in the
co-featured bout. The highly-regarded prospect saw his undefeated status dashed
to the wind at the hands of the wily former IBF super flyweight world champion
Juan Alberto “El Topo” Rosas, 39-8 (27), in a junior featherweight bout.
Gonzalez,
a very good boxer with power in both hands, looked tight all night long and
just couldn’t seem to use his longer reach and height, choosing to fight from
the southpaw stance for the majority of the bout. Rosas worked on the inside,
staying on top of his foe and firing shots which had Gonzalez’s right eye
bruised by the end of the third stanza.
Gonzalez
did manage to land some shots on the iron-chinned Rosas, who just kept coming
forward. He outworked Gonzalez until an accidental headbutt in the ninth round
opened a serious cut above Rosas’ right eye. The ringside doctor called for the
stoppage, sending the bout to the cards. As a result, Rosas walked away with a unanimous
decision via scores of 78-74, 77-75 and 80-72.
With
the loss, Gonzalez saw his record move to 22-1-2 (14).
In a
relative upset, super featherweight Gabriel Francisco Pina, 11-11-5 (4),
dropped Filipino southpaw Rogelio Jun “Hercules” Doliguez, 18-1-2 (14), in their
first round with Doliguez coming back to outwork the Mexican fighter for the
remainder of the six-round bout.
The official
ringside judges would see things otherwise, as they declared Pina the winner
via unanimous decision via scores of 57-56 and a completely unjustified 59-55
(twice) in a fight that could have realistically gone either way.
