Philly’s unbeaten heavyweight Bryant “By- By” Jennings, 16-0 (8),
received Sports Illustrated “Prospect of the Year Award” for 2012. It
was a year of awards and titles for the 28 year-old Jennings who fights
out of the ABC Gym in North Philadelphia under the guidance of
manager/trainer Fred Jenkins. He is promoted by Peltz Boxing.
Jennings started 2012 off in January winning the PA title defeating
Maurice “Freight Train” Byarm, then 13-0-1, over 10 rounds in
Philadelphia. He followed this up in March by stopping former WBO
champion Siarhei Liakhovich, then 25-4, in 9 rounds, in Brooklyn,
NY. Then in June he won the USBA title over Steve Collins, then 25-1-1,
in Newark winning all 10 rounds. In September at Newark, NJ, he
stopped Chris Koval, then 25-9, dropping him with the first right hand
landed, and a follow-up knockout at 0:35 of the first round! In
December at Temple’s McGonigle Hall, in Philadelphia in a USBA title
defense he knocked out Bowie Tupou, then 22-2, in 5 rounds with a
thunderous right uppercut. That’s 5 fights and 5 wins, 3 by knockout!
As always Jennings was gracious enough to take answer some questions:
KEN HISSNER: What were your thoughts on receiving the award?
BY-BY: I was highly appreciated when I received it. I thought I did great in the year 2012 and I agree they made a good choice.
KEN HISSNER: What’s it like as No. 4 contender in the IBF rankings to still be a prospect?
BY-BY: My being a prospect or being
labeled a prospect I don’t have a problem with. That’s not my
concern. I know I have to fight and not only fight, win. That’s my
main focus. Being a prospect is just a title. The only title I am
worried about is the world title.
KEN HISSNER: Who are you focused on fighting in the future?
BY-BY: None other than any of the Klitschko’s. Nobody else matters. I’m focused on them because they have what I want.
