With Floyd Mayweather Jr. free and clear to fight
with the blessing of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, it was
announced that ’Money’ will be facing Miguel
Cotto on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Not sure how good of a
fight this will be ( I think most would’ve preferred for this to happen
in 2006 or 2007) but this is a match-up between two of the three biggest
pay-per-view franchises in the boxing industry. It will do robust
business.
What I found interesting is that the press release says that fight
will be on ’pay-per-view’ but didn’t specify a network. Could this fight
possibly end up on Showtime? Also, no sign of Top Rank anywhere on the
letterhead, confirming that Cotto is a free agent. This will be the
first fight in his career without their involvement.
