Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquiao Update & More

Well, Juan Manuel Marquez has decided to accept Top Rank's revised offer to face Manny Pacquiao at a catchweight of 144-pounds, which, in essence, takes away the option for Golden Boy to match and offer him a fight with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. One boxing insider speculated to me on Monday night that if Top Rank came with a lowered weight, at that point, Golden Boy would then kick around the possibility of offering Marquez a fight with Victor Ortiz, who just recently came up from junior welterweight to capture the WBC welterweight belt from Andre Berto in April.

This seems to be just part of a larger chess game where archrivals Top Rank and Golden Boy are continuously jostling for power and influence within the sport. Another issue is that Ortiz is slated for September 17th (Yeah, yeah, I've heard about the reports of him facing Floyd Mayweather) and Top Rank’s Bob Arum has made it clear that in lieu of Antonio Margarito not given medical clearance to face Miguel Cotto on that date, that if Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. gets past Sebastian Zbik on June 4th- which is no sure thing- he would go with a Cotto-Chavez Jr. fight on that much coveted Mexican Independence Day weekend pay-per-view slot.

And both companies seem to think they have dibs on the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Funny thing is, neither company has a fight set in stone.

Such is life when you’re in a “Cold War.” .
