Puerto-Per-View Boxing

Don’t know how many of you saw it, but I thought the pay-per-view show in Puerto Rico was very entertaining throughout. I think the “McTwin Duo” of McWilliams Arroyo and McJoe Arroyo have some potential and Roman “Rocky” Martinez and Gonzalo Munguia put on perhaps the best round of 2010 with their back-and-forth slugfest in the third stanza of their tussle. Martinez finished off Munguia in the next round. Martinez, the WBO junior lightweight titlist, is a classic overachiever that gets everything out of his ability and couldn’t be in a bad fight if he tried. The main event featured Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. successfully defending his WBO junior featherweight belt by stopping the game Zsolt Bedak in ten heats.

I don’t think either Martinez or Vazquez Jr. are the best their divisions have to offer but they are fighters who are consistently in exciting bouts and they have a following on the island. It again shows that it’s more important to have hometown draws and real promoters than it is to have one championship belt. And in that vein, it is further proof that Peter Rivera doesn’t get nearly the amount of credit he deserves as a promoter, in developing talent and cultivating ticket sellers on a regular basis.

When it comes to major league promoters, this guy is often overlooked, but his track record speaks for itself.
