Schaefer looks to break all records with Mayweather - Ortiz, Saul Alvarez and More in PPV extravaganza

On Tuesday morning, Floyd Mayweather announced that on September 17th, he will face WBC welterweight champion
Victor Ortiz. So what happens now if Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeats Ryan Rhodes on June 18th?
Alvarez was originally slated to headline that pay-per-view slot on Mexican
Independence Day weekend.
According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer,
nothing, as Alvarez would still perform on that date.
"It just makes the
event bigger," he told Maxboxing. "So we are working on really
putting together what will be the best event ever. I mean I've been following
boxing for awhile- since I joined Oscar and buying pay-per-views- I want to put
together the best pay-per-view ever. I really do. So we're working on some
things and 'Canelo' would be a part of that."
There is a chance that this
extravaganza could take place in two separate venues on the same night.
"It might be a split-site," said Schaefer, who upped the ante. "I'm
working some exciting sh*t. If you're going to be a pay-per-view consumer and
you're going to be at home, you're going to see an event. You're going to see
like a two-for-one."
Ortiz-Mayweather will most
likely land at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Schaefer
has had a hold on the Staples Center for a few months on this date. He
confirmed that Alvarez's bout could land in that arena. He reinforced, "I'm
working on putting something together that will be the event of all events. I
don't care what fan you are of what; it doesn't matter. That night you will be
at home and will buy the pay-per-view because I'm working on putting something
together. I want to break all records."
And Schaefer is getting
closer to making a bout between Robert
Guerrero and Marcos Maidana come together for the late summer.
"I'm really on a
roll," he said, while channeling his inner Billy Mays. "I was really
encouraged with the ratings we got for 'Canelo' and [Matthew] Hatton; then we
moved on and did Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto,
a helluva fight. Then we did the Hopkins-Pascal [rematch] and now we're going
to do this fight here with Victor Ortiz and Mayweather and now it's like those
infomercials, ‘Wait, there is more!' So I am working on getting Guerrero and
Maidana done and I'm getting pretty darn close and I tell you what, I'm working on August 27th from San Jose.
"So I'm working on
that."
You have to admit it's a
pretty good run there for GBP.
