Boxing Numbers Ratings Game - Andre Ward vs. Chad Dawson

Andre Ward
Various outlets are reporting that this past weekend’s bout on HBO featuring Andre Ward and Chad Dawson had approximately 1.3 million viewers. And some are talking as if these are robust numbers but in reality, they are simply on par with most other “World Championship Boxing” broadcasts. Even “Boxing After Dark” shows (like Danny Garcia vs. Erik Morales in March) did approximately the same numbers and the last Adrien Broner abomination had more viewers. The forgettable fight at the Silverdome (aka “Shaw-mash”) had roughly around the same numbers as Ward-Dawson and nobody called that a blockbuster rating.

When you factor in that HBO not only put in $2.5 million toward this match-up, in addition to producing a “24/7” and a “Face Off” (which are normally only done for pay-per-view fights), attaching a heavyweight title fight to it, you wonder if they got enough bang for the buck.

But on the flipside, the numbers posted at the Oracle in Oakland were more encouraging. According to the CSAC, this event sold 7,611 tickets (with 1,038 comps) for a total gate of $706,469.25. In his previous fights in “Oaktown,” Ward's gate receipts had been trending downward, so this is certainly a positive. Beyond all that, Ward performed in a way that generated a considerable amount of buzz in the boxing world.

No, he's not a true superstar yet (because it's not determined by fantasy pound-for-pound lists) but, at the very least, the foundation is set for the future.
