’Star Power’ has been pushed ad-naseum by HBO and Golden Boy Promotions (which is their job) but it looks like they are still having some problems moving tickets for the MGM Grand portion of this split-site doubleheader. As the hotel is running this promotion: Promotion
Now, this isn’t a true give away like we’ve seen for some Amir Khan fights where room were flat out comped and tickets were given away, but it’s an indication that there are still plenty of tickets to be had. I think a few factors are at play here, first, the tickets for this show may have been over-priced (at $1,200 for ringside seats- which aren’t always that close to the actual ring) and then you have the economy, which is certainly a factor for many citizens. And perhaps, until Floyd Mayweather faces a certain congressman from the Philippines, there could be a bit of a backlash against him.
Also, I’ve addressed this issue before, but a lot of the good prime seats that the fans want, simply aren’t made available to the public at face value and are instead, given right off the bat to the ticket brokers, who immediately mark them up. I think the fans are getting sick and tired of this game. And who knows, maybe the fact a bona-fide Mexican star in Saul Alvarez is performing at the Staples Center that night, might have cannibalized ticket sales.
But again, this looks like another sell-out, that perhaps really wasn’t.
