Remember
just a short time ago when it seemed like there was a thawing of boxing's “Cold
War” between Golden Boy and Top Rank and how Richard Schaefer (Golden) and Bob Arum (Top) were throwing
verbal bouquets at each other?
Yeah,
you can forget about all that now.
When
I asked Schaefer about the possibility of Saul Alvarez versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
(who is promoted by Top Rank), he said with frustration, “Bob [Arum] does not
want to meet. Bob just wants to meet when it's to his favor. I'm sick and tired
of that. I'm really sick and tired of that and I wish him good luck. They can
go their own way. At one point, you try and try and it's just like you don't
get anywhere with these people.”
He
added, “It's like if you try to pursue somebody and build a relationship and be
friends and you just get rebuffed, ‘Not now, not this, not that.’ At some point,
it's just like, OK, I get it. You want to do your in-house fights, then fine. Go
ahead and do it. Don't be shy about it. Just call it the way it is and keep on
doing your in-house fights and that's fine with me and don't be like, ‘Oh, for
this one, I have time. For this fight, I have time to sit down with you but
this one, I don't. Yeah, this one I have time because it's a fight we like.
This one, no, we don't like it. I don't have time to sit with you.’”
“I
don't believe in one-way relationships.”
So now
that they are no longer BFFs, I guess you could call this a no-way
relationship.
