Floyd Mayweather Sr - On The Ropes Boxing Radio #175
By Jenna Jay (Exclusive Interview by Jenna J). On my 175th edition of "On The Ropes" boxing radio, I had a chance to catch up boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. He is considered by many to be one of the best trainers boxing today, and besides developing his sons skills, he has also trained Oscar De La Hoya, and Chad Dawson to world titles. Floyd gave me some unique insight on a variety of subjects going on in boxing, including the release of his son from jail, whether or not he believes his son has learned anything from being locked up, the possibility of training Amir Khan, Pacquiao-Mayweather, Steroids and when he believes his son will start showing signs of decline. Here is what he had to say.

On his son being released from jail:

"Being that it is my son, it was sort of up lifting, good to hear that he was getting out. He was having problems in there, but I'm pretty sure he learned something from it, and from now on I think he will stop, look and listen before he make a move like that again"

If he believes his son will gain something from this experience:

"It's going to do something for him, cause he don't want to be in a predicament like that again, and I know that it's definitely going to be a change for him. I think it teaches not just him, but other people that you can't just do what you want to do. I can't really say too much on it cause I don't even really know what happened, but I'm just saying there are laws and stuff, for people to obey, honor and abide by. I'm just glad he got out, and I know things were not good in there, but he's out now and that's good"

His thoughts on Amir Khan and if he believes he could help his defense:

"I could help him, but if he don't want help, that's on them and so shall it be.  My whole thing is I don't chase fighters down, I don't chase nobody down. I don't have to. But if he wants to fight, and learn how to fight, learn defense, offense, whatever defense it is, come see me. One call that's all"

On if he thinks Khan could adapt to his style of defense with the shoulder roll:

"That's not the only style of defense, the only way to defend. A lot of people like that cause my son does it and I guess it's cause they want to be undefeated to, but that's not Amir Khan's style, that's not his race. I'm just saying when I say race, I mean that no other fighter fought like that from where he at. I just don't why the best trainer in the world can't show him how to not get hit. The trainer with all the accolade's, the one granted with everything when it comes to training. We know who that is don't we...Freddie 'the joke coach' Roach. Why do you think Amir Khan is leaving him? The greatest trainer in the world, better then me, why do you think there are leaving him? All you can say right now is he is on the down sloop, that's whats happening"

On if he thinks a change is best for Amir Khan:

"Of course! Look, I'm not just saying this cause of 'The Jokester' he needs a change if he wants a change, because what he's doing right now, it's a joke. And that's cause Freddie Roach is in control, that's why it's a joke. But I'm going to be honest with you, I believe there is so much I could do with Amir Khan, I know I could do something with him anyway, but when he first came here they came to me first anyway, but I guess they did not like what I was doing and wanted to do what Freddie Roach was doing, what all the fighters in his Wild Card place are doing, the thing that they should not be doing, so that's what I think"

His thoughts on Manny Pacquiao and what fight he thinks should be next for him:

"Why can't he fight Floyd now? I'm just saying, why can't he fight Floyd.....it's cause don't want to fight Floyd! I'm just telling you, this is the biggest fight in the world. Pacquiao don't want to fight Floyd! believe me when I tell you Pacquiao is scared to death! Freddie Roach knows what time it is too. They know he's not going to whoop Floyd on the up and up. There is no way in the world he can whoop little Floyd. On the up and up he don't have a chance in hell."

If he believes his son could win the fight with Pacquiao without having any drug testing:

"I would never say my son could win any kind of way, cause any time someone has performance enhancing drugs in them, there chances are much greater then someone that don't have it in them, cause it don't take but one punch, it might be lucky, but it might do what they need it to do. No one should be having that kind of stuff in them anyway"

On meeting Manny Pacquiao and finding out that Pacquiao wanted to visit his son in jail:

"Pacquiao told me he wanted to see little Floyd, when little Floyd was in jail. Pacquiao did, right in front of the top rank gym. I guess he was training over there and he told me that he wanted to do see little Floyd in jail. He said he did not know if he could get in or not, and I told him I did not know if I could get in either. So that was the last time I seen Pacquiao"

If he believes we could start seeing a decline from his son, being that his son is now 35:

"My son is only a human being, my son is only human. He ain't no different then any other man that ever boxed in the history of boxing. The older he gets, the more things will show. The older he get, timing will show. The older he get the slower we will get. That goes for anyone that boxes, not just him. We can't get to thinking that Floyd is a superman, cause he's not. I'm just saying my son has done a lot for boxing, he been in the game a long time, and he's been at the top for a long time, but I don't care who you is, sooner or later father time catches up with us. Father time catches up with us."
