Arfan Iqbal Is A Knockout in Pro Boxing debut at Whitwick

SecondsOut.com - Derby light-heavyweight Arfan Iqbal launched his professional career
with a contender for knockout-of-the-year on promoter Clifton Mitchell’s
latest show at Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick, Leicestershire,
England on Sunday.
Iqbal detonated a right-hand power punch that
laid out Robert Studzinksi in the second of their six-round
light-heavyweight fight and showed why Mitchell rates the 20 year-old
light-heavyweight so highly.
Iqbal sold more than 100 tickets
and in the opening round, ‘The Major’ showed a loose-limbed,
quick-fisted pot shotting style. Late in the session, he connected with a
left hook that buckled Studzinski’s knees and soon followed up with a
quick-fisted volley that put the Welshman on the floor.
Studzinksi beat the count - and the bell rescued him.
Iqbal
finished the job early in the second in sensational style. He slung a
sledgehammer right hand that swept Stiudzinski off his feet and left him
flat on his back. The referee immediately waved the fight off without
bothering to count.
Nottingham-based cruiserweight Andy Ingram also gave a power-packed display.
Ingram,
a points winner over current Midlands Area champ Shane McPhilbin on his
debut in October, 2009, stopped Michal Skierniewski in the third round.
Ingram
unloaded heavy hooks in the opening round, then settled to box behind
his jab. He went for the finish after a left hook shook up Skierniewski
in the third. Ingram followed him to a neutral corner and kept the
punches coming until the referee jumped in.
Leicester slugger Tommy Ward won the battle of cruiserweight debutants by
knocking out Andy Mitchell in the fourth of a scheduled six twos.
Ward,
a former Junior ABA and Four Nations champion with Belgrave ABC, had
Mitchell on the floor in the opener with a body shot, but Andy came back
well in the second.
Ward got his jab working in the third, then showed a touch of class to end the fight in the fourth.
He
backed Mitchell up with jabs, then let go a lightning left-right that
dropped Andy in a heap in a neutral corner. He was counted out in the
act of rising.
Swanwick welterweight Steve Jevons was made to work hard by Andrew Patterson for his seventh straight win in their four rounder.
Jevons
showed smart southpaw skills and just before the bell to end the
opener, he stiffened Patterson’s legs with a combination. He couldn’t
discourage Patterson, however, and Jevons was relieved to hear the final
bell after the hard-as-nails Brummie hurt him in the dying seconds. The
referee scored it 39-37.
Prince David Davis took out late sub
Martyn King with a second-round left hook and Leicester welterweight
Junior Thompson had a competitive three-round exhibition against Lee
Jevons.
