Boxing: Antonio’s Reliable Source on Mischa Barton, J.Lo, Mike Tyson, Janet Jackson and yes, Boxing!
By Antonio Santiago, Doghouse Boxing (July 21, 2009)
I was at the gym’s spa recently massaging my all pained body, when I found an interesting story that inspired me for this column.

The woman next to me at the spa was telling us how after 19 years, she ran into her father in the most unlikely of places. She was at a photo studio to hire a photographer for her wedding, when the man appeared from behind the curtains. It was her father, and it was the first time that they had met. According to her, the likeness
between father and daughter was quite evident, as she looks a lot like her “old man”. From that moment on, the two have built quite a relationship and have shared a friendship that none had imagined would happen.

And so, the happy ending that story has made me think that sometimes as we all look for that defining moment of our lives, we have to stop and observe because if we don’t, that moment may just pass us without us noticing. Imagine, if you will, that tomorrow you will be singing in your house and for some reason, Jay-Z needs gas as he ran out of it right in the front of your house, so he stops by and hears you singing, discovering the newest sensation in the process. Imagine that you are at a basketball court and Bob Cousy shows up, leading to your being signed by the Boston Celtics. It could happen. It has happened. Rafer Alston was discovered by his former team, the Houston Rockets, while playing street basketball. And the little girl from “Poltergeist”, the late Heather O’ Rourke, was discovered by Steven Spielberg as she read something at a commissary at MGM. So, you just really never know when your moment of luck may come.

But like I said, you have to keep your eyes opened for it. Because when it does come, you better make sure you seize it and make the best out of it. After all, that one moment will be the one that will define your legacy and your history in this world.

And hopefully, like the lady at the spa and her father, you too can turn it into something very positive for all!

J-Lo +2!!

Jennifer Lopez is a lot. She is a singer. She is an actress. She is flaming hot. Likewise, her husband Mark Anthony is a singer and actor. And, of course, they are parents.

As you may remember, the couple had twins, Emme and Max Muniz, one year ago. Well, the twins showed up at Lopez’s movie set for the upcoming film “The Back Up Plan”, on Thursday, July 16th. The two beautiful kids were joined by grandma Guadalupe, according to US Magazine.

What can I say, but hope that J-Lo and Mark keep producing knockout kids in the future!!

Split Decision?

In the weeks following Michael Jackson’s death, we have been inundated with tons of Jackson and Jackson family related news. Of which I have something to say at the end of this note, by the way.

But the latest news involving the most famous family in the world have to do with sister Janet, actually. And her boyfriend, music executive Jermaine Dupri. According to US Magazine, the two may have called it quits, says a source close to the couple. Dupri was not present at a service that honored Michael Jackson recently either.

I shall take this moment to raise my hand, and call Janet out. Hey baby, I’m available!! I’ll be happy to catch you on the rebound!!!

Also, a word about news outlets that have covered Michael Jackson’s death and details: when you start trying to sell magazines by posting pictures of Jackson as he was being carried to the hospital, or of his body, it’s time for me to say: lay off!! I am upset at the lack of respect that so many magazines have shown just to make us pay 50 cents for their tasteless work.

At least boxing magazines never publish photos of our fallen heroes!

Oops, Daniel!

Well, the secret is out, the cat is off the hat and we all know who killed JD! Well, not quite, but to Emma Watson, it must feel like the entire world is open to her private life.

You see, the knockout starlet of the Harry Potter films, who I now feel not guilty of liking because she is a grown woman these days, had hoped to keep her college choice a secret, but her Harry Potter co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, told England’s The Guardian where Watson is headed to get a University degree.

And so it turns out that Emma will join Brown University in New York.

Geez, Daniel, couldn’t you have kept the secret?? After all, “Buster” Douglas would tell you, sometimes surprises are sweet!!!

Barton Checks Herself In

Mischa Barton seems to be in trouble again. The super-fine actress, star of the upcoming film “Homecoming”, had to skip the New York City premiere of that movie because of a medical issue, according to People.com.

Barton called police in Los Angeles on July 16th, according to LAPD spokeswoman, officer April Harding. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital and placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold.

Hey Mischa, keep on fighting! Remember, life is just like boxing, where you can come out victorious even at the last second!!

So You Wanna Impress?

Ok, you are a newbie, and you want to become noticed. So what do you do? Well, you throw a Hollywood-like bash, of course!!

According to Lemondrop.com, you should take a hint from a number of celebrities if you want to throw a real cool party. The website says that a way to do it would be to treat your guests like if they were “Oprah” show guests instead and handle out $5 dollar Pashminas. Also you can play Lady Gaga music all night, or just do like Heidi Klum and have Halloween (or whatever other them you like) parties like they are the last party you will ever be a part of.

I don’t know about “pashminas” (in fact I have no idea what that is!), but my idea of a wild, cool party? Well, booze, “gangja” and babes, of course!!!! And Lady Gaga herself!

Hey, you always gotta go for the knockout!!!

The Kennedy’s Remembered

It has been 10 years since the deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister, Lauren Bessette in a plane crash just off Martha’s Vineyard, Connecticut. It seems crazy but that’s how long it has been. Time sure flies by.

Well, Stylelist.com published an article commemorating Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her fashion sense. Little known is the fact that JFK Jr. ’s wife was a fashion expert who worked as publicity director for Calvin Klein, no less!

The IBF and WBO should borrow a page off Stylelist.com with their effort in keeping Bessette Kennedy on our memories, as their pages did not include even a single mention of Alexis Arguello when he died!

Sometimes, we the guys sure have a lot to learn from the girls!!

Our Condolences

Once again, the world has been stricken by another terrible aviation tragedy. This time, it happened in Iran, as Caspian Airlines Flight 7908, from Tehran, Iran, to Yerevan, Armenia, crashed near Qazvin, in northern Iran, on July 15th.

The plane involved was a Tupolev TU-154, similar in structure to a Boeing 727 aircraft. Possible causes include a fire on the plane’s tail. All 168 occupants lost their lives. This comes on the heels of the Air France crash near Brazil and the Yemenia crash at the Comoros.

Of course, we must take into account, despite all the bad news in aviation these days, that planes are not falling off the skies: there are thousands of flights around the world daily, so the skies do remain, and by far so, the safest place to be in Earth.

To the families of those who perished, our deepest condolences on your irreplaceable loss.

Seen and On The Sceen

Former world Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson was at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to enjoy Miguel Vazquez’s stunning upset of Breidis Prescott on ESPN2‘s Friday Night Fights. Hot prospect Prescott was handled rather easily by Vazquez, who won a ten round split decision (the judge who had Prescott winning probably saw the fight from Mars, where he should stay so that he’s not hired as a boxing judge anymore).

Former 2 time world Flyweight Champion and once world Junior Bantamweight Champion Santos Laciar was the headliner among a group of Argentine boxers who were gathered to comment on world Flyweight Champion Omar Narvaez’s career by TyC Sports, at a documentary that the channel gave on Saturday, July 18th, which was dedicated to Narvaez. Others included women’s world Champion Marcela Acuna, former world Junior Welterweight Champion Juan Martin Coggi, former world Middleweight Champion Jorge Castro, former world Lightweight Champion Raul Balbi, former world Cruiserweight Champion Marcelo Dominguez, former WBA Mini Flyweight Champion Juan Carlos Reveco and many more. A splendid homage to a splendid Champion.

“Shoeless” Antonio!

If you happened by 24 Hour Fitness at Phoenix and saw a certain, mysterious figure walking barefooted, you may not have been having visions after all. You may have just seen me!

You see, I was there and, mindless as always, I did not pay the 50 cents charged to get a locker. So when I came back after time at the sauna and the pool, it turns out my shoes had “left” without me. If you see lonely, wandering tennis shoes around, tell them daddy misses them!!!

I just laughed it off a bit, because that will fall in the “it only happens to Antonio” category! On the other hand, I want to give my gurl Sami ast 24 Hour Fitness a big shout: She’s the coolest worker there, and the friendliest, and that’s a lot to say, considering they have all become like a second family to me!!!

Now imagine if this “shoe incident” had happened to me had I been a famous boxer before a famous fight!!! I’d become known as the “shoeless boxer” for the rest of my life!!

Our Hearts Are With

Ricky Hatton. The English boxer, who once reigned supreme as world Junior Welterweight Champion, was hospitalized with chest pains and vomiting, according to Daniel Poland of the very best boxing website in the world, Doghouseboxing.com. Hatton may have been suffering from food poisoning, and he tested negative for the Swine Flu.

R.I.P.

Walter Cronkite, 92. The Missourian journalist became famous across the United States as the anchor of the “CBS Evening News”, a job which he held from 1962 to 1981. Cronkite also hosted other various shows and events, such as “You Are There” a television show that re-enacted famous moments in history, and he also covered a number of political conventions, both on the Democratic and the Republican side.

Cronkite is most remembered for announcing President John F. Kennedy’s death in 1963 on live television, and also for his coverage when Neil Armstrong became the first human on the moon.

Cronkite has a school named after him in Arizona, the Arizona State University naming it’s journalism school, the “Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication”.

According to Wikipedia.org, he died on Friday, July 17th of undisclosed causes.

May he rest in peace.
