Nonito Donaire punches Jorge Arce
One week after a disappointing defeat of a national hero, Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire regained national pride for the Philippines with a crushing three round obliteration of Mexican rival Jorge “El Travieso” Arce at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, USA.

Despite the presence of notorious strength coach Angel “Memo” Heredia, who was in the limelight a week before for transforming Juan Manuel Marquez into a cartoonish Incredible Hulk-like figure at the advanced age of 39, Arce (61-7-2, 46 KO) had no answers for the taller, faster, smarter, and more powerful Donaire (31-1, 20 KO). From the opening bell, the usually brash Arce’s eyes looked wider than ever before; he knew what he was up against.

It was as if Arce was playing chess against Garry Kasparov, not only does the chess master capitalize on any mistake, but also is thinking of multiple possibilities of moves beyond the counter.

Mistake one was made in the second round; Arce threw a jab, and Donaire threw a right cross over the top of it, sending Arce staggering. Arce bent forward and both of his gloves touched the canvas. He immediately balanced himself and let referee Laurence Cole that he was okay. He managed to survive the round.

In the third round, Arce lunged in with a left hook, Donaire rolled under it and countered with a short right cross, that again staggered Arce. Donaire followed up with three left hooks that sent Arce to his knees. He rose, but on very shaky legs.

He stood in front of Donaire, and Donaire nailed him with his trademark left hook. Arce’s body sprung forward, and then backwards as it slammed into the canvas. His gloves covered his face, and referee Cole immediately stopped the bout at two minutes, fifty-nine seconds.

Remarkably, Donaire turned 7,250 Mexican fans into his fans in twelve short minutes. Dramatic performances like this do just that.

Note: This broadcast marked the final one for HBO commentator Larry Merchant. Despite numerous head-scratching analogies through the years, Merchant always seemed to give the view of an average fan that just wanted to be entertained and commanded respect due to his overall body of journalistic work . He will be missed, and the fact that he being replaced by Max Kellerman is a sad ode to the new “hip” generation. Kellerman will never be Merchant, but hopefully he shows enough improvement in his role that he can at least be mentioned in the same sentence at some time in the future.

Undercard Notes:

Mexican super bantamweight contender Victor Terrazas (36-2-1, 21 KO) won a hotly disputed decision against journeyman Juan Ruiz (23-11, 7 KO). Ruiz seemed to outwork Terrazas through the rounds and landed numerous thudding body shots, as Terrazas tried to outbox his foe backing up throughout the fight. The crowd and those at ringside seemed to think that Ruiz won the fight, but the judges disagreed. They traded 78-74 scorecards with the embarrassing 79-73 scorecard of Judge David Sutherland’s 79-73 being the difference.

Welterweight prospect Alex Saucedo of Oklahoma City stopped Eddie Cordova in the third round. Displaying smooth boxing skills for his tall frame, Saucedo halted the old man in the third round, setting his record to 7-0 with 5 KO. Cordova falls to 3-4-1, with 1 KO.

Mexican welterweight Daniel Sandoval (30-2, 29 KO) nearly stopped journeyman Larry Smith in the first round, but Smith managed to survive the round, and the whole six rounds, to the disappointment of all in attendance. Sandoval won the six round decision, 60-54 twice and 59-55. Which round was scored for Smith is a mystery.
