Alfonso Gomez Defeats Julio Lanzas
Mar 1, 2004 By Brent Hedtke
On Friday February 28th, 2004, in front of a packed house at the Radison Greystone Castle in Colorado, up and coming welterweight Alfonso Gomez won a unanimous six round decision over last minute replacement Julio Lanzas.

Gomez dropped Lanzas in the third round and used his thumping jab and his quicker hands to keep the game Lanzas at bay. A number of times the slick Gomez was forced to brawl with Lanzas and the two 147 lb. warriors had the sell out crowd on their feet. In the end it was Gomez’s more accurate punching and all around natural skills that proved the difference. He was awarded a unanimous decision by scores of 60-53 and 59-54 (twice). With the victory, Gomez moves to 10-2-1, 4 KO’s.

Also on the bill, heavyweight prospect Kenny Lemos was forced to settle for a majority draw with journeyman Louis Monaco. Lemos defeated Monaco last year, but entered the ring rusty after nearly five months of inactivity. The scores were 57-57 (twice) and 58-56 for Lemos who moves to 5-1-1 with 2 KO’s.
