Now that the smoke has cleared and the dust has settled down of what was the 154-pound showdown between the WBA super welterweight title holder Erislandy Lara 19-2-2 (12 KO’s) and the declared winner of the match-up, Saul Alvarez 44-1-1 (31 KO’s). Team Lara has looked back at the decision, and still doesn’t believe that Canelo should have been awarded the victory. In this exclusive interview, Lara’s co-manager speaks out on the decision and more, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.:
What did you think of Levi Martinez’s scorecard?
Bob Santos: I thought his scorecard was atrocious. I really believe he gave Lara that last round as a makeup call for all the rounds he scored for Canelo prior to that. After scoring 8 straight rounds for Canelo, it almost feels that Levi said to himself, I have enough rounds for him now so I’ll give the last round to Lara. If he didn’t give Lara that last round his scorecard would have been even more ridiculous. To have a scorecard that out of whack is unbelievable. Fights are scored on a 10 point must system. If you go round by round, Lara beat Canelo easily. Facts are stubborn things, Lara out landed Canelo round by round 7 to 3 with two rounds being a tie.
If you go to work and you don’t perform to a certain level, you get fired. If Levi was at any job, he would be fired right now. I hope he’s just incompetent not corrupt, and if that is the fact, then something needs to happen to him and I think he should be fired or suspended.

Your thoughts on Canelo’s trainer, Chepo Reynoso, saying the Cuban School of boxing is limited?
BS:
Speaking of school, 2 + 2 = 4. Lara landed more punches and had a better connect percentage. In all sports, the team that scores the most points wins. I thought it was clean effective punches that you scored a fight on. I guess Levi Martinez comes from the same school as Chepo and Team Canelo because nothing Canelo landed was clean, all his punches was grazing. Did Levi Martinez and Chepo go to school together?”
BH:
Team Canelo said Lara was running all night and didn’t deserve to win…your thoughts?
BS: At the end of the day, every team or player has a strategy to win the game. In football you either have to stop the pass or the run. In boxing the goal is to punch, land and don’t get hit. It’s not our fault that Canelo can’t cut off the ring. Lara was making Canelo miss by two or three feet. It’s like a pitcher missing the strike zone by two or three feet and now his missing by a foot and the umpire is still calling it a strike. Canelo was missing the strike zone by a wide margin. All I keep hearing is Lara needed to win more convincingly…he won but had to win by a lot. That's like saying…Hey that team only one by a field goal, they needed to win by a touchdown, to beat the home team. It doesn't make sense. Only in boxing can someone win and not be rewarded for it. It’s a shame these athletes put their life on line to be treated this way...the way Levi Martinez treated Erislandy Lara. Shame on Levi Martinez!
