Gary Shaw Doghouse Interview: “The fans are the ones who are going to benefit” By "Big Dog" Benny Henderson Jr., Doghouse Boxing (July 21, 2014) TweetFollow @DoghouseBoxing
Promoter Gary Shaw began his journey in professional boxing in 1971 when he began working for the NJSAC, and served the commission in a variety of positions for twenty-eight years. In 2002 Shaw founded his promotional company Gary Shaw Productions, and since that time he has worked with some of the biggest and brightest names in the boxing business. Coming up July 26th two of his rising stars in his stable will be in the spot light, as his middleweight fighter Daniel Geale takes on Gennday Golovkin, and his American heavyweight hopeful Bryant Jenning’s goes head to head against Mike Perez. In this exclusive interview, Shaw gives his thoughts on the upcoming night of boxing and more, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.:
Thanks for taking the time to speak with Doghouse Boxing, your fighter Daniel Geale has a hellacious match-up coming up against Gennday Golovkin. Give the readers your thoughts on that match-up.
Gary Shaw: Golovkin is considered the best middleweight in the world and Daniel Geale is here to prove everyone he’s the best. It’s as simple as that. Daniel Geale is a great human being and I like his chances in this fight. This is a real fight, one the fans will enjoy tremendously.
BH:
We know that Golovkin has a lot of pop, and Geale, he is bit of a mover. So with their styles, how do you see match-up playing out?
GS: I have a tremendous amount of respect for Golovkin, K2’s Tom Loeffler and this is a tough fight for Geale. I think Daniel needs to stick to his game plan and box his way to victory. Daniel has enough power to keep Golovkin honest, so I see him winning a decision. Every fighter has a style that can beat them, and I believe Daniel’s style will give Golovkin problems.
BH:
On the same night, the fans will get another glimpse from your heavyweight Bryant Jennings, another heavyweight hopeful for the American fans. In your opinion, what separates Jennings’s from the other American heavyweights?
GS: Jennings is the best athlete I’ve ever worked with and that’s what separates him from the rest. He’s an incredible athlete with an enormous amount of character. For a guy of his size, Jennings moves like a cat and can throw punches off angels. He’s the real deal.
BH:
Perez and Bryant have almost identical records, yet different styles. What are your thoughts on this heavyweight match-up?
GS: Perez is a very good fighter and Jennings is ready for the challenge. I believe Jennings will come out on top for the simple fact that he’s the better boxer, in my opinion. This is a great matchup. When you have two guys who are undefeated, putting everything on the line, like Jennings and Perez are doing July 26th, the fans are the ones who are going benefit.
BH:
We as fans of the heavyweight division, at times feel it lacks the excitement that it possessed a time ago. Do you feel this fight could possibly be an exciting one?
GS: No doubt about it, this fight will be very exciting. Both, Jennings and Perez are hungry to make a name for themselves. In addition, they are fighting in a WBC elimination bout, with the winner getting a world title shot against the winner of Stiverne vs. Wilder.
BH:
I guess in closing, your thoughts on the night of boxing coming up July 26th?
GS:
These are the type of fights that boxing needs. No one knows who’s going to win. Most of the time, you have these matchups where you already know what the outcome is going to be. I like to take pride in knowing that my shows are always going to have evenly matched fights. On July 26th, everyone should be tuned into HBO on July 26th to see a great night of boxing.
