Benny Henderson Jr.
First off thanks for stepping in to the Doghouse, what has been going down in the life of John Scully?
John Scully
I have been training a couple of amateur guys here in Florida. I have a couple of professionals I have been working with as well. I am excited about that, plus we have the show, “Knockout”, I will be flying out to Connecticut to film the finale. It has been getting great reviews thus far; it has Roy Jones Jr., Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Sr. and I, plus nine fighters. It should be a great finale.
BH
We have had boxing reality shows such as “The Next Great Champ” and “The Contender.” What is different with this reality show than the other two?
JS
The others had the fighters being individuals, on Knockout; it is more of a team. We have three teams, and three coaches. The Contender had one trainer. Here it is a team competition. It is pretty interesting. You do get to see the drama behind the scenes, which I feel is important. To see what these fighters go through.
BH
You fought as a professional, and now you train amateurs as well as pros. This might sound like a silly question, but which is harder, training fighters for a fight, or fighting itself?
JS
Physically, obviously being a fighter is much harder, there is nothing compares to actually taking the blows. But it is a bit similar, because as a trainer, I feel like we are a team, if they do not succeed, then I do not succeed. When my fighter losses, I feel like I lost, when my fighter wins it feels like I have won. Although the fighter actually fought and gets the credit, it feels as I am with them. For an example, there have been two times throughout my career in boxing, and I have been in the sport for over thirty years now. There has been two times in my career that after a fight I have been so exhausted, just drained. And believe it or not, both times, I was the trainer, not the fighter.
BH
Your thoughts and opinion on Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is loved, he is hated. And now he may be facing Andre Berto, a lot of people are not fans of that match-up. Your thoughts?
JS
You know, in my opinion, and I believe I am right. The reason people do not like Floyd; they do not like his big mouth or his bragging. Now, Ali did the same stuff, but here is the difference and you really have to pay attention. Ali always did it with a smile. He did it like a comedian, he was funny, you could see through his bragging. Floyd, and a lot of old school guys take offense to him with him saying he is the greatest of all time. He has been around a long time; we are talking nineteen years as a pro. That is amazing. But, he has only had forty something fights in nineteen years. That is not nearly as impressive. Boxing purists get a little aggravated when a guy like this says he is the greatest, when in fact, Archie Moore had four times as many knock outs as Floyd has fights. In a span of seven years Sugar Ray Leonard fought four super, and I mean super phenomenal fighters, and he beat all four of them. So I think people do not appreciate a guy saying he is the greatest ever and he really means it. Ali said it, but he was very respectful to Joe Louis, James Braddock and Rocky Marciano. Floyd says he would beat Leonard. I do not think people like that.
BH
Andrew Berto facing Floyd Mayweather?
JS
In my opinion, I think here is where they screwed up. They should have saved Manny Pacquiao last. Clearly anything after Pacquiao is not going to be as excited about. Unless he fights GGG there is nobody at 147 or 154-pounds that can match Pacquiao. They had the big fight, now this fight. People do not feel Berto can challenge Mayweather. No to dismiss Berto at all, he is g fighter, but in the grand scheme of things, Floyd’s level is above everyone. Pacquiao was the one that people thought had a chance.
BH
What advice would you give to a young prospect?
JS
Two things, and I do not care if you are an Olympic Gold Medalist, the pros are much different that the amateurs. It is great to get the experience, but being a great amateur does not mean you will be a great pro. You have to have a different mental approach to it. Take it very seriously. And forget about all the flashy stuff, being in rap videos, having your own clothing line, the main thing is you have to be in top shape. At the end of it all, the other stuff doesn’t matter. When you climb in the ring, your trunks don’t matter, your entrance music don’t matter, who you hang out with does not matter, the celebrities there to see you doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is you and how you have prepared for the fight.
BH
Anything in closing?
JS
I am really excited about the show Knockout. These guys are really working hard; I believe the finale is going to be great. I am grateful to be part of this show.
