Unbeaten light welterweight prospect, Wellington Romero 4-0 (2 KO’s) has the goods and the mind set to carry on with a successful career, but he lacks a promotional company to help his continue on. As of now, the twenty-three year old is a free agent, but, he is looking for a place to call home. And in this exclusive interview, he speaks out on his career and more, enjoy.
I understand you're a free agent. Where did you have your 4 fights?
Romero: Technically I'm promotionally a free agent. Reason I say technically is because I have no signed promotional agreement with anyone. My first three fights were with Main Events and the other was with Golden Boy.
Are you looking for a promoter or are you content on fighting as you have been?
Romero: I definitely prefer to have a promoter, but a promoter who believes in my ability. Every fighter wants security knowing that he'll be fighting regularly. I just want to stay active and achieve my goals of becoming a world champion like every other fighter. My amateur background speaks for itself.
You
have guys that I beat in the amateurs that are made out to be stars in the pro ranks. I look at their opponents and I look at the records of the guys they've fought compared to the guys I've fought and I feel I'm fighting the better competition.
I'm only 21 but I have the mentality of fighters like Trinidad, Fernando Vargas, and Zab Judah. These guys fought for titles after 12-17 fights. They weren't spoon fed bums to pad there records.
Most of your fights have been with Main Events. Seems they believe in you. Do you agree?
Romero: They are one of the top promoters in the business. Jolene has given me my last three fights so yes I would say she believes in me, but not sure why they haven't offered a promotional agreement. I'm looking to fight every month
so we'll see what happens.
For those who haven't seen you fight, what makes you so special?
Romero: I'm a natural southpaw with speed and power and I have the international amateur experience that has prepared me for the pros. I've fought in front of big crowds so I can handle the pressure. I feel the pro ranks will better fit my style because I like to go to the body. I just want to stay busy.
