Undefeated
super featherweight sensation Joel Diaz Jr. 6-0 (5) plans on keeping
his record unblemished this Friday night when he takes on fellow
unbeaten Guy Robb 7-0 (3) in a scheduled eight round clash on
Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation. In this exclusive interview,
the hard hitter gets candid with his thoughts on his career, his
opponent and more enjoy.
Benny
Henderson Jr.: Give the readers your thoughts on being showcased on
Showtime’s ShoBox.
Joel
Diaz Jr.: I mean, it is a
privilege man; it is a one time opportunity for my career to blow up.
I have to stay focused on this and show everybody around the world
what we have and what we have been training for.
BH:
On paper you are facing a tough undefeated cat in Guy Robb; he
already has a win over a previously undefeated fighter. What do you
tell us about your opponent?
JD: Like you said he is
undefeated, has some decent wins, he is a bit shorter than me, that
is about it. Actually my trainer and my Dad they do all the research,
they study them and tell me what to do and I do it, and hopefully
everything they tell me what to do works in this upcoming fight.
BH:
It is always, well almost always, entertaining when two undefeated
fighters collide, bit when you have two undefeated fighters hook-up
on Showtime, it always adds some excitement to the mix, but in the
same sense, does it add a little bit of pressure as well?
JD: Yes it is a little bit of
pressure but not too much, we are both undefeated and come Friday we
will go toe-to-toe and see who is top dog and see who takes this
fight. We will see whose career is going to blow up, and hopefully it
will be us.
BH:
Looking at your record you have won every bout via knockout except
one, Teddy Atlas always says that could be power, or the opponents.
Is it the power, I mean do you go out searching for the knockout?
JD: Like everybody says I have
power behind my punches, and do not take me wrong, sometimes power is
not always going to take the fight, we train to box, and if that one
punch does not work we are ready to go the distance. We are well
trained, but if we can finish them off in the first couple of rounds
then we will, if not then we will go the distance.
BH:
What separates you from the other cats in your division?
JD: Power, other than that my
height, I am big for my weight class. I like to use my reach and
everything.
BH:
What can the fight fans expect from you come fight night?
JD: I
can box as well, it is not all about one punch, I also know how to go
toe-to-toe and if this guy wants to do that then we will have
ourselves a fight. We are going to have ourselves a good entertaining
fight for the ringside fans, and the fans world wide tuning into
Showtime. We are ready.
BH:
In closing is there any message you would like to send out to your
opponent or the fight world?
JD: To my opponent, bring me
whatever you’ve got, let’s leave this in the ring, no offense,
but we are going to fight, and I am going to put all my heart into
this so he better be ready. To my people, much love and keep watching
me, I am going to show them what I’ve got.
