Brian Minto: "Tell Chris Arreola I will stomp a mud hole in his ass and walk it dry!"
Interview by Benny Henderson Jr., Doghouse Boxing (Feb 17, 2009)
Although one of the many accolades the heavyweight contender Brian Minto 32-2 (21) possesses is humility, in his quest to be the best the Butler born boxer has brought out something more than sweet talking and kindness, with success and the hard journey to the top a fighter has to have that savvy talk to get that one throw down that may throw him or her to the top, and Minto has began to work that into his portfolio.
So with Minto wanting to add another victim to his hit list, and before he can come out throwing dukes in the ring, "The Beast" comes out swinging in this first no holds barred interview conducted but, Doghouse Boxing, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.: What's going down in the world of Brian Minto?
Brian Minto: I am looking for a big meaningful fight, to get one step closer to fighting Wladimir Klitschko. I would like to maybe get a date with Chris Arreola if all possible. Which I do believe it can be possible. He is supposed to fight on the Wright-Williams undercard.
BH: Although you did not say it, it was reported in a press release that you stated that Arreola has not earned a title shot. Do you believe that?
BM: I don't think that he has earned it, let's go through his opponents, Chazz Witherspoon, was he world ranked? No. Travis Walker was ranked, that was Chris's biggest fight today, it was not much of a fight, and Walker got blown out by TJ Wilson. TJ was not ranked, he was a very beatable guy. They call Arreola the next best American heavyweight, that is because he has had the chance to fight on HBO, I have not, so I am saying why cannot we fight, I fought ranked guys, I fought Krasniqi, and I think he is a better fighter than Travis Walker. So I think that I deserve a shot at Arreola, but you know I know how his promoter is so I am not holding my breath. As far as money-wise, I do not know if that is going to happen, I just hope he sends an offer sheet.
BH: What do you think about you and Chris's style matching up?
BM: I actually watched him fight Travis Walker, I thought Walker should have boxed him more, he was doing fine setting that right hand up. He got greedy, Arreola is a tough kid, you are not going to knock him out early. Obviously he took some hellacious shots, from the looks of it appears that he doesn't train very hard. He is carrying some weight that he should not be, I think you can exploit some things in the later rounds. He does have some power, I am not going to say that he is a horrible fighter, Shane Moseley showed with any kind of game plan, and the right game plan you can beat anybody in the sport.
BH: The general consensus is that Minto vs. Arreola would be a great match-up, Brian Minto is a tough fighter but does not have the power to put Arreola out, but Arreola has the power to put Minto out. Your thoughts on that?
BM: The only thing I can say is let me hit him on the chin with one really good punch, and I guarantee I can put him out. Everybody gets that twisted with me, they think I cannot punch, they look at me and I am 5'11" and 210-pounds, oh he cannot handle it, do you know the first comment that John Poore made after our fight? I had no idea he could punchy like that. That is an advantage for me, cause people think they are going to come in here and blow me out, well come on try it, when I hit you on your chops I guarantee you will have a whole different outlook on how you are going to fight me. I feel so much stronger in my past few fights, and in my training. I am not going to sit here and bad mouth Chris, he has earned his position, but not a title shot. He got exposure on HBO, they want to make him the next best American heavyweight.
You see them recycling heavyweights such as Sam Peter, Andrew Golota and Hasim Rahman, when is enough enough, give other guys a chance, it is just greed. I don't know what it is, but it is not right, let these other guys who are ranked have their chance, instead of putting Evander Holyfield in a title fight, there are so many guys in front of him that deserves that spot. It is wrong.
BH: Again in the press release, and again although you had nothing to do with it, it states that you stated that a fight between you and Arreola would clarify the division. Do you believe that, if not or if so, why?
BM: It would clarify the division as far as the next American heavyweight goes, I think the winner out of our fight should get the shot, I mean why not? Povetkin lost his opportunity, Klitschko isn't even interested in the fight. But you know what I see my opportunity coming because these guys look at me and say, boy he is easy pickings. And I hope they do because I would like to get my shot, like these guys who came up, I would like to get my opportunity, I would like to get my shot. I think it would be a meaningful fight, and a fan friendly fight, am I confident, yes, I am not worried about it, I don't think that anybody is indestructible, Chris is human like me. He may be bigger, but all that blubber does not mean he is stronger. Chris can eat as much tortilla chips as he want I do not care, I will stomp a mud hole in his ass and walk it dry. But you know what, if it can be made and the money is right, but we know the promoters can screw something up in a minute, I am just waiting to see what is going on. If they want it, it would be a great fight, I am ready to step up and take that chance. I heard HBO wants him to fight Samuel Peter, they want that fight, no way, they figure is Sam hits him and knocks him out, he is gone he is done. HBO wants the fight and is pushing for the fight, oh well, I leave it in God's hands. If it happens it happens, if it don't it don't, I will fight somebody else
