Coming up this Friday night from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, ILL, and making his debut on Showtime’s ShoBox: The New Generation, undefeated super middleweight prospect Edwin Rodriguez 14-0 (10) aims to have a spectacular debut as he takes on hard hitting Kevin Engel 17-2 (14) in a scheduled eight round 168-pound attraction.
Just two years in his young career, the Dominican Republican born boxer has devoured all that has crossed his pathway, out of his fourteen wins, ten have ended in knockout, three in the opening round, and his last opponent only lasted forty-seven seconds.
In this exclusive interview which was conducted by the boys at Big Dog Radio, Benny and Bob talk shop with Edwin and get his thoughts on his upcoming bout, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.: You will be taking on hard hitter Kevin Engel this Friday night in Showtime, what are your thoughts on the up coming match-up?
Edwin Rodriguez: I have been working hard like I do for every fight, Kevin Engel is a gentleman and I wish his success, but, it is my time and I am ready to shine on Showtime.
BH: What do you know about your opponent Kevin Engel?
ER: I have seen a couple of his fights, and he has a good right hand, but that’s all he has. I will take that hand away and pick him apart.
BH: This is your first time on Showtime’s ShoBox, how does it feel to be showcased on such a major network?
ER: It is my first time to be on Showtime, but it will not be the last. But I am going to go in there with an open mind, I have done all the hard work already in the gym, I am going to showcase my talents and let the fists fly.
BH: How did you get your nick name “La Bomba”?
ER: I got it from people who watch my fights; they say I throw bombs instead of punches.
BH: What do you feel separates you from the other prospects in the super middleweight division?
ER: My hard work and my dedication, I am committed, this is my job and I believe that nobody works as hard as I do.
Bob Carroll: Of course the Super Six is going on and the winner will be taking on Lucian Bute to consolidate the titles, how far down the line do you think you are from a major world title shot?
ER: For a minor title I think I will be ready by the end of this year, for a major title I say maybe a year to a year and a half, give me time to improve and prepare to beat the guys at the top. It is a very tough division right now, but I work hard and I am still young and I will be ready for those guys by the time they come out of the Super Six.
Bob Carroll: What do you feel will make the super middleweight division the king of all divisions?
ER: Right now we have a lot of up and comers and I really feel a year or two from now we will meet up and it will be the next generation of another Super Six. USA has a lot of great talented middleweights coming up right now and I am proud to be part of it.
BH: What do you do when you are not training?
ER: I love being with my family, and playing chess, chess keeps my mind sharp.
BH: If you could send a message out to your up coming opponent, what would you say to Kevin Engel?
ER: I hope he prepared really well because I am ready and I am coming to knock him out, maybe he can last longer than my last opponent, which was forty-seven seconds, and that guy had never been knocked out before.
BH: Well brother I don’t believe in luck so I will not say good luck, but I will close with God bless you and be safe and do your thing come fight night.
ER: You know what I think about luck? Luck is for somebody who is not prepared, and I am more than prepared for this fight.
