Daniel Dawson: “I am going to take Sergiy Dzinziruk to a place he has never been before!”

This Friday night from the Chumash Casino, in Santa Ynez, CA, hard hitting Australian born boxer Daniel Dawson 34-1 (24) will take on Ukraine’s reigning WBO light middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk 36-0 (22) in a scheduled twelve round clash.

The 1996 Ukrainian Olympian Dzinziruk will have his hands full with the hard punching former kickboxing champion Dawson, who tallied up a 53-11 (31) kickboxing record, but his hands have carried his power as well knocking out twenty-four of his thirty-five opponents, with most of his kayos ending within six to eight rounds.

In this exclusive interview, “The Rock” speaks out on his upcoming fight, enjoy.

Benny Henderson Jr.: Give the readers your thoughts on the upcoming title fight against Sergiy Dzinziruk.

Daniel Dawson: I see this as a great opportunity; I have been here in Los Angeles at Fortune’s Gym for about a year now. I have been training hard for my debut fight here in America. I have a great record against southpaws, he is a left hander but still has an amateur style, and I can work around my opponent hitting from angles setting up shots. I see this as a great opportunity to not only beat this guy, but to show America that I am a good fighter and plan on staying here for a while taking on the best in the world here in America.

BH: Any butterflies fighting here in America for the first time?

DD: I fought all over the place as a kickboxer, and I have had some great experience in big venues, but you are going to have some butterflies before any fight especially a world title fight. It is a dream come true so there is some excitement coming into this fight, but I am prepared to go into this battle.

BH: I know you gave us a little insight on your opponent, can you go a little deeper on his style?

DD: I have watched tapes on this guy, he is a neat compact boxer, he is not a boxer/puncher, he is just a straight up boxer. He is not flashy, he is not a power puncher so he is ready for a twelve round fight, I see him as the sort of guy who uses what works in the ring and keep working around that.

BH: What can the American fight fans expect from Daniel Dawson come fight night?

DD: They can expect a lot. My style, I have the ability to press forward, I am strong, I have a great jab and great power in both hands, I can punch with both hands from different angles. I think I bring a lot, and, I have a great game plan. I think the fans can expect great boxing and a guy who is passionate about what he is doing.

BH: How do you like it here in the U.S so far?

DD: l think it was the best move for my career, I am sparring with great fighters and I expect to be here for quite a bit longer.

BH: The one thing I see in Australian fighters is the one thing I see in Mexican fighters, just tough as nails. I assume the way Mexican fighters are raised in Mexico with the poverty and all makes them tough, so what makes you Australian fighters so tough?

DD: Every nation is proud and we are a very proud competitive nation, we compare ourselves to everybody in the world, and we are just on our own, and we try hard, it is an inner drive for us to prove that we are tough.

BH: Man I love you people, the Outback Steakhouse is one bad son of a gun, and I would really like to go to Australia one day and drink beer with my buddy Anthony Cocks, but I am too damn afraid that a crocodile would eat my ass, they would catch my fat ass.

DD: Ah, we would protect yah. (Both laughing)

BH: Any message you would like to send to Sergiy Dzinziruk?

DD: I am going to take him to a place where he hasn’t been in a long time. He is going to feel a lot of things that he hasn’t felt come fight night, I am really hungry and I want this, I want this with my soul and my heart, and he is going to know that. I cannot wait!
