They say the third time is a charm, but in the case of Vazquez vs. Marquez, the magnetism of the ring warriors meeting up for a fourth time, seems to have the fans salivating more than ever. The first three match-ups were that of epic proportions, they were touted as fights of the year and contained rounds of the year, but most importantly these scraps represented something great for the boxing world. And although Israel Vazquez 44-4 (32) is 2-1 over Rafael Marquez 38-5 (34) in the three match-ups, the two will meet up once again this Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA, only on Showtime Championship Boxing, in what is a highly anticipated fourth match-up.
So with Vazquez seemingly holding the upper hand over Marquez, why are these two gladiators of boxing throwing down once again? In this exclusive interview with Vazquez, Israel explains why, as well as giving his thoughts on much more, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.: Once again it is a pleasure having you here at Doghouse Boxing, all I can say is wow, three wasn’t enough, so you and Marquez are going for four. Has to be in the top of all time trilogies, with you having the advantage 2-1, why a fourth go around?
Israel Vazquez: Our fights had everything a fight fan could crave. But it lacks one thing…closure. Rafa still feels he is the better fighter. Come May 22nd I’m going to leave no doubt, that I’m the better fighter.
BH: The first three throw downs were classic, how do you see this fourth match-up unfolding?
IV: It’s going to be another exciting fight. The fans won’t be disappointed. I’m coming in with a different strategy. Rudy Perez, Justin Fortune and I have been working on boxing more. We may be giving Rafa a different look, but its going to end in the same result. I’m going to win.
BH: How has your training been for this go around with Marquez?
IV: Everything has gone well. We brought Justin Fortune back with us. And I think he has been a great addition. He is really getting me into shape. I’m feeling very strong.
BH: My question is for Frank, in your opinion, why should there be a fourth go around between Vazquez and Marquez?
Frank Espinoza: Well, for those that have seen their trilogy know that Vazquez and Marquez never put on a bad fight. And that’s what boxing is about. Putting on great fights. Both men are getting paid well and are well rested. They fight for the fans. Now, it’s time for the fans to come out and show their support. These warriors deserve it.
BH: Do you see this fight being any different from the last three?
FE: We are coming in with a different strategy. Rudy Perez feels confident that Israel can out-box Rafa. But at the end of the night, I still feel Israel will knock out Rafael Marquez.
BH: OK Israel, your thoughts on the current state of the featherweight division?
IV: I think it’s a great division. With Marquez, Gamboa, Juanma Rojas, Chris John and myself. I think it’s a hot division again. The featherweight division will be making some noise in the boxing world soon!
BH: What can the fight fans expect from Israel Vazquez come fight night?
IV: As always, the fans can expect me to put on another exciting fight. I think the fans know by now, when I step in the ring. I come to fight. I always come with intentions of pleasing my fans.
BH: Anything you would like to say to Marquez before the fight?
IV: Train hard Rafa! Because you know I’m coming to win! May 22nd will be my night to shine!
BH: To you both, thanks again for taking the time out to speak to me, anything in closing?
IV: I would like to thank my fans and Doghouse Boxing. Please make sure you watch Showtime on May 22nd because it’s going to be another great fight.
