By Benny Henderson Jr. (June 11, 2010) Doghouse Boxing
It was once said, “There’s no place like home”, and come this Saturday night, the San Francisco, CA, born boxer Karim Mayfield 12-0-1 (7) will finally find out how that feels when he fights in front of his hometown fans for the first time since turning pro four years ago this month.

Karim, who is called, “Hard Hitta”, is taking the welterweight division by storm with his heavy hands, and willingness to box or brawl with his opposition.

The twenty-nine year old unbeaten prospect has fought in other’s back yards, now aims to relish the moment to throw down in his own back yard when he takes on the twenty-seven fight veteran Sergio De La Torre in a scheduled eight round 145-pound clash, and in this exclusive interview, the young gun speaks out on his upcoming fight as well as his career, enjoy.

Benny Henderson: You have the fight coming up this Saturday against Sergio De La Torre, your thoughts on the match-up.

Karim Mayfield: I believe De La Torre is coming to fight.  I expect a war and I'm preparing for his best.

BH: What do you know about your upcoming opponent?

KM:
Haven't seen to much film on him.  I know he's been in there with some tough guys.  He's a durable opponent.

BH: What statement do you feel that you have made with your last few fights, and what statement do you want to make with this fight?

KM:
My last fight was against a southpaw who was brought in as a late sub.  I came out victorious but feel I could have done better.  This fight will be in San Francisco, my hometown, so I want to give the fans their money's worth.  I definitely want to make a statement.  A knockout would be nice; I'll be seeking one for sure.

BH: Where do you feel you stand amongst the other welterweight prospects?

KM:
I believe I'm right there with the best up and coming fighters in my division.  A lot of my fights have been against undefeated opponents in their backyards.  I've come out victorious each time, so I feel I'm a top prospect.

BH: For the ones who haven’t witnessed Karim Mayfield in battle, how would you describe your greatest strengths and style?

KM:
For the most part, I like to land power shots.  My power is my greatest strength, but I can do it all.  The best word to describe my style is "Explosive"

BH: What is your routine before your ring entrance?

KM:
Being relaxed is very important before a fight so I'm always listening to music.

BH: Any message you would like to send out to your opponent?

KM:
I hope you bring it, because I am.

BH: Anything in closing?

KM:
Pro boxing is back in San Francisco.  The fans out here are some of the best.  I'll be looking to put on a great show for everyone.
