Purnell Gates Interview; “I think Zab Judah is a stuttering coward, and a punk ass b-tch!”
By INTERVIEW BY Benny Henderson Jr (Oct 3, 2007) DoghouseBoxing
Doghouse Boxing was recently contacted by the welterweight prospect Purnell Gates 14-1 (12 KO’s) who had a few choice words for the former three time world champion Zab Judah. Gates, a once beaten Michigan native who has racked up six consecutive knock outs claims he was sent a contract by to fight Judah, gladly signed and sent it back, and to his dismay a week later was told the fight was off.
Why did Zab Judah back out, was it promotion, did they find a more suitable opponent, or is Judah scared? Purnell
Gates has a whole lot to say on this matter at hand, and the Doghouse readers gets to read first hand his thoughts as well as some other goodies, enjoy.
Benny Henderson Jr.
Well brother, you contacted me last week in high spirits the day you signed the contract to fight Zab Judah, now you are getting back with to telling me the fight if off, what happened?
Purnell Gates
That is a fight I want brother, they sent me a contract, I signed it and sent it back. I started training and such and I began getting all these calls from different people and one of the guys who called me whom I will keep anonymous is good friends with Zab. He called me and we spoke, then the next day the matchmaker called me and said that they did not want the fight.
BH
So after you signed and sent back the contract you are saying they did not want the fight?
PG
I was told that ESPN or Classic Sports or whatever would not accept the fight, but they have nothing to do with it because it is not a televised fight. Man like I said they are trying to protect Zab that is what it boils down too. The guy doesn’t have a chin, yes he is a tough fighter for his size and weight, but now they are biting off a little more than they can chew. I feel like they are, yes his experience level his higher than mine but it does not have anything to do with that, when we go in there to fight he has to fight. He is fighting a bigger more physical guy. He does not have a chin. He just fought a guy who had a record of 22-10, how the hell can he fight a guy who is 22-10 on ESPN and then turn around and turn around a guy like me, what is the problem with fighting a guy who is 14-1 with 12 knock outs, that does not make sense.
BH
You said you have people calling you, one being Zab’s friend, why where they calling you?
PG
Well he had called me, and asked about some fighters I had and I told him I was fighting Zab and he told me he had a southpaw he could send me to use in my camp. I am not going to use a guy who can come and spy in on my camp and go back and tell them what I am doing. I have been trying to call him back and he is not answering his phone, I have not heard anything back from them. I talked to a matchmaker and a few others and they told me I was a dangerous fight for Zab Judah, I am a big guy and Zab is small. And nobody thinks he has a chin, he is going in there with an unknown that seems to be a puncher. I think they should have done their homework before the sent out the contract; you just cannot sit there and send out contracts and not to agree to it. One, we had a verbal agreement and your intent was to fight because if your intent was not to fight me you would not have sent out a contract.
BH
I do not know much on contracts and all, but if you sign it, is it not a binding agreement?
PG
I signed it but I do not know what is going on. They said Zab signed, but on the contact it showed for my signature, then the promoter was supposed to sign it. I called back the next day right after I signed it and I told the matchmaker to send me a copy of the contract after all had been signed. He was like what; you are the first person to ever ask for that, I told him that I had to cover my own butt because they could try to pull some bull crap. I called him three times and he called me back a week later and said they do not want the fight.
BH
Giving your honest opinion, why do you think the decided to decline the fight?
PG
I think they don’t want the fight because, well what I was told because that they had to talk Zab into the fight. They called me and asked about the fight and I said yes. I told them to give me a contract, the guy told me, do you know that they had to talk Zab and his Dad into this fight, I was like are you serious? He said yeah, they did not want it, they had to talk them into it, I asked if they signed and he said yes they did. This is what Anthony Capone told me, he said we were good to go. Zab needs to fight me, come on try me Zab. They don’t need to send out a contract if the fight is not on.
BH
The guy has fought a lot of tough guys, so do you think that Zab is scared?
PG
That’s what it boils down to, why else wouldn’t they accept the fight. They want easy fights, I cannot say this is true but from anonymous person told me Zab asked to fight a white guy, now what does race have to do with it?
BH
And you heard this from his friend?
PG
I heard this from (Anonymous name).
BH
If you could send out a message to Zab Judah, what would you say?
PG
I want this fight bad, I want this fight bad! I am looking at it as such, come in with it, you talk a good talk, but now I feel they bit off more then they could chew. You from Brooklyn so you say you are this and that and tough, come on with it, Zab is acting like a coward, stand up and be what you are about. I am a man of my world; I just feel they should be too. Cowards are cowards; you can take coward way out, or the man way out. Either way, I say they are looking at it as Zab’s career is just about through, that beating he took from Cotto, then he is with a guy that is 22-10 and goes to decision, come on now, you supposed to be super Zab Judah. If they make this fight, as they should since I signed, this will not go to decision! If you want to test his chin, this is the fight to do it; I feel that he (Zab Judah) is a stuttering coward, straight up.
BH
That statement there should be enough to piss him off.
PG
Him and his Dad want to sit back and talk a bunch of junk, come on with it man, let the fight go. Everybody approved it, what’s up? Be a man, stand up. I think that Zab Judah is a stuttering coward and a punk ass bitch. If you are a man of your word then stand up, all this bitch crap let’s kill it. You want to call out everybody and want an opportunity, he done had more opportunities than the law allows. If I am that easy than knock me out, get me out of there. Come on man; let’s be real about it. Once he steps to me his career is over and I am not playing, he is going to get knocked the $^#& out, that is what’s going to happen if he does man up and take this fight, I signed will you? Zab has no respect for nobody; look at his past, chunking referees, him and his whole family are just crazy man, let’s put it plain and simple, Zab I signed the contract, why won’t you?
